Charges recommended against Army officer at Abu Ghraib
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nation/3584602.html

WASHINGTON - Army investigators have recommended that criminal charges be filed against a supervising military officer in the abuse of detainees at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison, according to Pentagon officials and legal documents obtained Thursday.

Charges against Lt. Col. Steven Jordan, who was the top Army supervisor at the prison where detainees were frequently abused and sexually humiliated, would mark the first instance in which the Pentagon has sought to hold an officer criminally liable for the scandal that ignited a sharp anti-U.S. furor in the Arab world in 2004.

<snip>

A Pentagon official said the Army's Criminal Investigative Command had reviewed allegations against Jordan and recommended that he be charged with offenses that might include dereliction of duty and making false statements to military investigators about incidents at the prison outside Baghdad.

In addition, documents in upcoming courts-martial of two Army dog handlers accused of threatening detainees with their animals show that Jordan's immediate supervisor, Col. Thomas Pappas, has been granted immunity from prosecution so he can testify in "any court-martial resulting from the investigation into alleged offenses committed by Lt. Col. Steven L. Jordan."

WASHINGTON - When President Bush last week signed the bill outlawing the torture of detainees, he quietly reserved the right to bypass the law under his powers as commander in chief.

11. Yeah - shouldn't the ones writing and signing the statements, memos and
legal briefs justifying this kind of treatment also be held accountable for when their low-level (and now mid-level) lackeys are caught converting the words from their "torture templates" into actions?

Or does that just happen in the parallel universes where justice is more of a reality and less of a poetic ideal?

10. And it will take a lot longer to get anyone else.
I just don't see how people can treat other people like they did.
It's inhuman! There should be a way to psychologically test and remove people of this nature from the military before they enter.
