Clinton in Deal to Cut AIDS Treatment Costs
By DONALD G. McNEIL Jr.
Published: January 12, 2006

Former President Bill Clinton plans to announce today that his foundation has negotiated lower prices on AIDS tests and on two important AIDS drugs.

Four companies, from the United States, India and China, will offer rapid H.I.V. tests for 49 cents to 65 cents, which will reduce the typical cost of a test in poor countries by half, Mr. Clinton said in a written statement. Another four companies - three from India and one from South Africa - will make the antiretroviral drug efavirenz for as little as $240 per patient per year. One of the Indian companies, Cipla, will also make the antiretroviral abacavir for $447.

The most common three-drug combination pill for H.I.V. now costs $136 per year, so the new drugs, even at steep discounts from the thousands of dollars they cost in the West, can easily triple the cost of therapy. But as patients become resistant to their first-line drugs, doctors must have new options....

14. Nothing. I love Clinton. So many people here want to burn him @ the
stake. I'm just saying the same stoopid shit people say about the man in a post that makes the statements look as STOOPID as they are.

I think they call it...:sarcasm:

3. Why is it that retired, democratic presidents are always so selfless...
...while retired, Republican presidents join organizations like the Carlyle Group?

Values.

11. True that, re. ex-Democrat Presidents vs. Republicans
Edited on Thu Jan-12-06 09:36 AM by Dunvegan
At least in my lifetime.

Reminds me: President Carter will be in San Francisco at Cody Books tomorrow.

I hope to break away and hear him speak.

Even ex-Democratic First Ladies have an activist streak.

I met Roselyn years ago when she was First Lady at a discussion on women's mental health issues.

She was incredible: Very good listener, incisive questioner...no flash whatsoever. I don't even think she was wearing makeup that day. She was just intent on becoming informed enough to have the intellectual ability to further the options for those who required assistance.

8. I doubt Xultar was being sarcastic
Clinton did plenty of things that were harmful to the public. His crime bill was just awful. Clinton also put into place huge loopholes in the law so that walmart could go nuts with jobs going overseas. NAFTA, CAFTA it all started with Bill Clinton. He's no gwbush but, he's gonna have to do a lot to make up for the harmful things he did in office.

13. As to "jobs going overseas", IRS Code 482 was enforced under Clinton
It is not enforced now. The allocation rules that prevented a rush overseas under Clinton are broken under Bush and there is in effect a tax incentive to go overseas.

NAFTA was just about a zero change with jobs lost replaced by exports giving us jobs gained.
