Super Bowl Wants Only Young Dancers
"DETROIT - Mick Jagger and his bandmates may be nearing senior citizenship, but Super Bowl planners only want people 45 and younger to take the field during the Rolling Stones' halftime show.

The NFL is offering 2,000 people a chance to watch the Stones play during the Feb. 5 extravaganza. They will be expected to dance, sing and cheer.

<snip>

The NFL says the reason for the age cutoff is that the job is physically challenging. Volunteers must enter and exit the field quickly and be on their feet for long periods. They will not have seats and will wait in a tunnel under Ford Field for most of the first half.

Participants also must attend up to five rehearsals that could last seven hours each.

"You have to attend rehearsal and be able to stand for long stretches of time," McCarthy told the Detroit Free Press. "And you have to run onto Ford Field with 2,000 other folks."

As a fine '57 vintage myself, I think all of us over 45 should boycott ABC, their owner Disney, and all the Super Bowl advertisers. You'll see a few here:

"coffin dodgers" as you so eloquently state since the Stones were the highest money making concert band last year.

only want young, athletic, physically strong and football-savvy players on their football teams. Sounds like discrimination to me.

It was pretty fun and I would dare say that at least half the people there were over 40, if not 45+.

10. Makes no difference to me
As usual, our congregation will be doing its "Souper" Bowl thing, a couple dozen people putting together enough soup packets for 15 families to eat twice a week for a year. All free, all volunteer. And a hell of a lot more fun than watching another Super Bowl blowout.

12. Many bean soup
We get an assortment of pinto beans, black beans, navy beans and other beans. The beans are thoroughly mixed and put in a ziplock bag with a little tub of spice. The instruction label is stapled over the top of the baggie. It's a good way for folks to develop their culinary skills, eat a healthy meal, and learn to stretch their budget a little bit. We have a great time.

15. hey, don't tell the NFL
They'd probably send a squad of hired goons to flip over your tables and pour your soup out on the sidewalk if they knew you were cutting in on their trademark.

Well, not really.

The NFL's litigiousness is legendary, though.

16. I am being realistic
Discriminating against people who are 45+, when they form the bulk of the Stones' fan base, is just stupid. They're looking for enthusiastic FANS. They said they want people to "dance, sing and cheer." Who under 45 knows words to the Stones' songs?

24. It's because of the first national championship
40 years ago, before they even called it the Super Bowl. It was a day game, because that night the Stones were playing on the Ed Sullivan show. That's the only reason. There are certainly "hotter" acts to have on.

35. Out of 40 the NFL has only had two Superbowls north of ATLANTA
One of them, Superbowl XVI, was already in Detroit. So, I can't really say that Detroit is more deserving than a lot of Superbowls.

Also, the NFL has no current plans to have any future Superbowls north of Atlanta.

40. 45+ who just got back from 1-1/2 hrs. of ballet class
Who they callin' old? And I am now out of shape, have had to take time off to care for Hubby. I was taking 2 full hours 2x/wk, for a while, including a pointe class! Mind you, I probably qualify for the ballet hippo costume (I'm a large person)...but still, 2 hours of dancing, no problem.

30. I'm 51 and in a helluva lot better shape than most any 21 year old
I can just about bench press my weight and I hit a golf ball further than the sons of the guys I play with. I love to laugh at 'em!

But I've seen the Stones 3 times and wouldn't care to jump through the hoops they want these people to just to see them up close. We had 12th row and 5th row seats on consecutive nights in San Antonio in 1975!

41. Five rehearsals that could last seven hours each?
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 12:01 AM by rocknation
Just to sing, dance and cheer for a rock band? Isn't that what marching bands, choirs and dance troupes are for? And even their cheerleaders get paid. By the way, do they get workman's comp if they get hurt? Either they're trying to bust the local screen actor's guild, or it's some kind of backdoor draft where they gas everyone in the tunnel, and they wake up on a slow boat to Iraq!
