Bush confident in facing 2006 challenges

President George W. Bush on Saturday recapped 2005 and stated his confidence the United States could meet any challenges that 2006 brings.

2005 has been a year of strong progress toward a freer, more peaceful world and a more prosperous America, said Bush in his final radio address of the year.

He reviewed items the White House has been touting as positives for the administration over the past year, including political gains in Iraq and the performance of the U.S. economy.

Thanks to our tax relief, spending restraint and the hard work of the American people, our economy remained the envy of the world, he said.

2. Recession. Remember 1991?
That year is the blueprint for this year.

Layoffs aplenty are happening and more are coming in the same positions and industries.

18. Same here. I have a hunch 2006
will be a backbreaking year for the U.S. We're at a peak in so many areas, and they can only go in one direction: down.

The real estate market is the most glaring example. Fully 36% of our GDP is driven by the housing market, like real estate sales people, the mortgage industry, banking, new construction, even places like Home Depot. When that bubble starts to slowly deflate, watch out. Our entire economy is tied to that balloon, and we're already seeing air seeping out of it.

And guess what? Bush will be blamed for all of it.

(holds up champagne glass) Skål, George. Our suffering won't be a total waste.

Let me state I'm confident 2006 will continue the 2005 reality-push into Bushworld, and this dangerous man-child will finally have nowhere to escape to as the long arm of the law reaches out to hold him accountable for his high crimes and misdemeanors against this country and the world.

17. Bush highlights Iraq elections, US economy in 2005
By Tabassum Zakaria

CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President George W. Bush wound down a difficult year plagued by instability in Iraq and political scandal in Washington by citing progress toward democracy in Iraq and Afghanistan and a strong U.S. economy.

:spray:

In his weekly radio address on Saturday, New Year's Eve, Bush said "2005 has been a year of strong progress toward a freer, more peaceful world and a more prosperous America."

But it was a year in which Bush faced sharp criticism for his handling of the Iraq war, methods for fighting terrorism, and the administration's slow response to Hurricane Katrina.

Bush, who advocates spreading democracy in the Middle East, praised the elections in Iraq and Afghanistan, and pledged that the United States would not abandon the two countries.

GM shares dropped to their lowest point in more than 15 years Tuesday, and closed down 5.7 percent at $19.85 on the New York Stock Exchange on reports that Asian rivals are increasing their market share Toyota Motor Corp. poised to overtake GM in terms of global production.

The Detroit automaker, which has struggled amid slow sales of trucks and sport utility vehicles, recently announced a number of plant closures and job cuts.
