Washington poised for revelations from top lobbyist

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The political establishment here is on edge as a former top lobbyist embroiled in a wide-ranging corruption scandal appears poised to reveal some dark political secrets.

Jack Abramoff, a Republican activist for 20 years and a generous donor to President George W. Bush's election and reelection campaigns, is accused of fraud in a criminal trial due to begin in Miami, Florida, on January 9.

Arguably Washington's biggest influence peddler before his indictment, Abramoff, who has made millions from his lobbying activities, is facing charges in connection with the purchase of SunCruz Casinos, a fleet of casino boats.

But the former lobbyist is reportedly negotiating a plea deal with Justice Department prosecutors and his insider revelations could rock the political establishment in the nation's capital.

    24. Thankfully, no (read ZERO) DEMs took money directly from Abramoff
only from the tribes he hoodwinked...

Don't fall for the RW lie about DEMs being involved at the same level as Repugs on this. See DU thread here for more: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=5702882

    4. Abramoff will probably only give up the Democrats........
in his plea bargain. Giving the names of his Republican gangster friends could get him dead. I can't see him giving too much away here. He's a shoe-in for a bush pardon and like I said, if he gives up the big boys in the GOP I foresee him having an unfortunate accident in his immediate future.

    7. But he's not the only one talking. And, if prosecutors believe that...
...he's not being forthcoming, they can yank the plea agreement right out from under him. I only hope that there are good, honest prosecutors on the case.

    65. Hastert's reply? He decided to shut down the House's return
=Republican politics delays Gulf Coast aid (in a move to save DeLay's hide) Our governor appeared before a House panel on Dec. 7 and admonished Congress for the lack of federal help in getting our state back into shape after Katrina ("Barbour: Recovery stalled," Dec. 8).

"We are at a point where our recovery and renewal efforts are stalled because of inaction in Washington, D.C., and the delay has created uncertainty that is having very negative effects on our recovery and rebuilding," Gov. Haley Barbour stated.

Fourth District U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor backed him up with this statement: "I applaud you for scolding the House leadership. I didn't vote to elect Dennis Hastert, governor — you helped get him there. I'd hope you'd use that influence to get him off his duff."

 :wtf: And what was Hastert's reply? He decided to shut down the House's return from its winter break until Jan. 31, 2006. The reasoning behind this move to keep the House closed for an extra two weeks? It does not look like House Majority Leader Tom Delay will get his money laundering trial finished until the end of January. If the House was to reconvene at its normal time, members would be required to vote on a new leader. :grr:

As Mississippians on the Coast huddle in tents and burn what is left of their homes to keep warm over the holiday retail season, we should have comfort in the knowledge that our needs will be on the back burner while the House figures out what to do about its leadership — or lack of it.

"Josh Marshall has some great info on this over at the Talking Points Memo. Jack was a 25-year GOP bagman. He was operating a slush fund to support one-party rule in the USA.

That's why Democrats are not involved. They were the enemy.

While Democrats may be involved in any number of corruptions and/or scandals waiting in the wings, they are not involved with Abramoff.

This is a GOP owned and operated scandal."

"Are you aware of the South Korea issue in this scandal?"

="More on Kim Seung-youn From Time:
As chairman of KORUSEC, Kim--virtually its only donor--was host to a procession of congressional delegations through Korea, sat in the House gallery as DeLay's guest of honor at President Bush's 2003 State of the Union address and later that year met with Vice President Dick Cheney in Washington."

="This part rings a bell in regards to... Gannon/Guckert...

Another Abramoff financial vehicle was the nonprofit American International Center, a Rehoboth Beach, Del., "think tank" set up by Scanlon, who staffed it with beach friends from his summer job as a lifeguard."

=AAR and Al Franken Franken's been talking about this scandal for months and months and months. More proof that AAR, lame as it can be, is certainly a very important way to diffuse information.

==More information over at Stakeholder... jesselee has more details on Ben's cooperation over at DCCC's The Stakeholder, including text from the letter George Miller wrote demanding a DOJ investigation.

It has some good details on Ben, Tom and Jack when they all got along and worked with a boy named Mike and AGS's Ed Buckham.

So, is the DOJ investigating DeLay with Jack? It is beginning to look that way...:applause: :7

    25. They will Follow The Money like investigators do.
It will be difficult to name names and leave out one party or another. It is more likely that hidden bank records, financial laundering operations and the like will be revealed and these money trails will reveal WhoDunnIt. The money trail always leads to the villans.

I don't think if Abramoff wants to see the outside of prison walls before he dies that he will lie by omission in any substantive way. Prosecutors are probably telling him to tell the whole story or no deal. That's just how it's done.

    59. I noticed on CSPAN when they were reading the major criminals,
I mean politicians, :dilemma: and at the very end was Harry Reed.

Odd how much Harry Reed has taken on the Repubs in the house over and over and over. Now the man is included in a list of Republicans. Might be in the NYT. I haven't really looked though. Would probably be an easy search on Google.

I just hope Tom DeLay has that shit-eaten, arrogant grin on his face when he has to go to jail. I would love to be there.

Abramoff will probably work out a deal. It depends on who he wants to take with him too.

Give 'em Hell Harry Reed. Hope you didn't get too involved in this mess.

    68.  Fully Support the Tribes' Rights... ...to advocate for their positions.
It is strange indeed. The tribes were the ones who were ripped off by Abramoff. It's blaming the victim. Here's an analogy:

Imagine that someone's house is robbed, and the burglar gave away some of the stolen goods to his friends for favors. Then imagine that the owner of the house had given you his old VCR.Now, if someone who had recieved stolen goods had tried in their defense to claim that you were implicated too, because you had been given something by the homeowner, we'd laugh in their face.

I doubt they will try this defense in class, as a first-year law student would rip it to shreds. This is purely political damage control.

~I Fully Support the Tribes' Rights... ...to advocate for their positions. I am constantly amazed at the ability of folks to smear sovereign tribes with this...it is a MSM diversion. Repeat after me:

"Smearing the tribes as a part of the Abramoff investigation is a diversion..."

It's just a tactic to make it appear that "everyone does it," "The democrats are as bad as the republicans," etc.The more they can dilute the republican names with other names, the more likely it is that the republicans named will be let off.

    67. The Riggs Bank info dovetails with Sibel Edmonds' allegations
Lest ye forget... Let us not forget the Bush-Riggs Connection.

The Riggs Bank info dovetails with :patriot:Sibel Edmonds' allegations very nicely. I think the problem is that almost EVERYONE would be implicated. Sorry, even democrats. It's like a mutually assured destruction arrangement, with everybody having something devastating on everyone else.

If you're familiar with BCCI, it was a similar deal...both parties, bigshots from all over the place...everybody who was anybody, just about, was in bed with those folks. Good ol' Senator Lurch Kerry had to work his ass off to get that investigation going, and although his final report was admirable it never led to anything much on the legal front.

Hence, it never died- And wasn't the m.a.d. thesis straight out of the President Reagan era?- None the less, she (edmonds) can't tell us, because she has since been gagged and had her Info retroactively classifyied could she be refering to President Bush's uncle Jonathan Bush and the Riggs Bank $25 million fine for a "willful, systemic" violation of anti-money-laundering laws as well as all these recent developments? Nah, of course not. <snark>

But if you wanna take her advice follow the money...

democrats took well over a million of Ambramoff money over this time period. Don't fool yourself into thinking there is a real difference between the Tribal money (directed by Abramoff) and Team Abramoff money.

or did rep Kennedy not take 500+ thousand from Abramoff clients?

ABramoff --connected to the RAndy Duke Cunningham bribery scandal via BRent WIlkes---both Abramoff and Wilkes worked for a HOnduran company associated with cocaine and weapons for the Contra proxy armies. through WORLD Finance Corp.----during the IRan/ Contra scandal it was a finance front--intelligence front for money laundering- all that cocaine money.

ABramoff also connected to the SunCRUZ casino ships scandal- via Adam Kidman-mafia hit contracts

ABramoff also connected with many African dictators- via another nefarious character--- Joe Slavik--MR AFrica in Bush lobbying circles

and of course Wally Hilliard- who ran the flight school where terrorists trained connected to the Air caribbean importation of drugs which he has been indicted for

Many more fish to fry---Media won't dig on this one dream on!

If Georgie waved his magic pardon pen right now he could probably save the whole mess from exposure. It might bring Georgie down in the polls, but it would sure be some nifty impeachment insurance.

I hate to sound so cynical, but the last 5 years has pushed me over the cynical edge.

With so many of our lawmakers implicated in corruption, I think it's pretty presumptive to think the justic department is above their corruption. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if Mr Gonzalez and a whole boatload of justice officials are taking European vacations soon, and only a few scapegoats in congress take the fall...not enough to tip the balance of control, of course.

The USA is the new banana republic.

    48. Is the US headed towards a civil war?
    RESPONSE TO ORIGINAL POST ONLY:
I mean honestly think about it, this is a valid question on my mind as of late. We, as US citizens talk so much about those evil Republicans, and some talk out those spineless Democrats. Now don't get me wrong, I am about as left leaning as you can get. However as a hard 60+ hours a week working, trying to make ends meet, being bled dry by our current "leadership" or lack thereof true blue American, I am just sick of it all. I am sick of the blame games, I am tired of the mind games, I am tired of the war games, I am tired of every #@$! game going on in this country. What earth shattering moment in our countries history will it take to wake up the average Dick and Jane Public? Just reading this fantastic post from stop the bleeding, it all just makes me want to puke.

Now please don't get me wrong, I respect every single one of you who posts on this board. I respect how much you are involved where I am not, and I appreciate you to help me find my voice, and to connect with other DU people.

BUT - I get back to my original question...what's it going to take? I think our country is headed towards a potential civil war myself. I think that is the only thing that will wake up the rest of our country, to get the voters who have their head buried in the sand because they think their vote won't count, to restart our nation anew, is to start over.

We need to get back to the basics of what our constitution http://www.archives.gov/national-archives-experience/charters/constitution_zoom_1.html started as our founding fathers intended it to be.

No longer do I want us to be - One fractured nation, under GOP, with power and health care to those who can afford it. Instead, let us unite to become - One nation, under God (or whatever higher power you believe in), with LIBERTY and JUSTICE for ALL!

Does anyone else believe we are headed towards a showdown in this country, or am I just spinning off in my own little galaxy over here? Thoughts anyone?

    49. the division has been intentially created
this administration thinks that it can create the reality, with a little help with their corporate media friends. There are some people who will always be in denial, but there are many people that are starting to question the media and the administration. Like a snowball rolling downhill, once enough corruption is exposed, there is no way to go except downhill for this administration. Yes, some people are lazy boob tube watchers and only get glimpses of news, but there are many who like collecting information, and even some Republicans know their party has been highjacked. They cannot maintain the facade forever. I still have hope--like Studs Terkel, I still believe in the American people. Most are not cruel, but some are selfish and apathetic. The more the majority of Americans lose their economic comfort zone, the more they will wake up. Losing your healthcare, your pensions--seeing your children jobless or in minimum wage or yourself with a minimum wage job, seeing your children die after being lied to, will soon cause an effect. It's just a matter of time. However, if there are that many clueless, I'm more than willing to see a few states secede peacefully. ;)

    66. Dennis Hastert to set the agenda for the new year??!!
It is completely unacceptable to the nth degree, that ANYONE in Congress would allow Dennis Hastert to set the agenda for the new year!

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5613477/
By delaying the Congress having open meetings until Jan. 31, Hastert is giving a known criminal Tom Delay time to attempt to beat his legal sheet.
He is also effectively derailing the entire Congressional agenda for over a month at the least, when criminal trials are pending & oversight hearings need to begin damn well immediately.

Contact Mr. Hastert's office here! [email protected]

For all of you in Congress, show up at the capital before Jan. 31 and show your disapproval to this outrageous abuse of power. This is the last time to be taking undisclosed vacations or going on holidays, and further, this is the only time to tackle the verified voting issue once and for all and
outfit every machine with voter-verified paper ballots.

Every vendor is insecure and must be dealt with the same way: Voter verified paper ballots and random audits, or else our elections are a complete sham driven by nothing but lies. Get in front of this issue once and for all and put it at the front of your agenda!!!!!!!! Voter IDs are worth nothing without random audits done of the voting machines, and insecure voting machines tested then removed.

    http://www.bradblog.com/archives/00002209.htm

And for everyone reading this, pass the word and ring the phones off the hook!!! The time to contact Congress and get the Verified Voting issue dealt with once and for all is now!
    =
Subject: Dr. Dean, 9-11 was a farce, the elections are a sham, and we won't take it anymore!
    To: howarddean@..., info@..., harryreid@..., senator dorgan <senator@...>, john rockefeller <senator@...>, Senator Warner <senator@...>, dianne feinstein <webmail@...>, hardball msnbc <hardball@...>, Faith&Values Media <info@...>, Senator John McCain <John_McCain@...>

    Send Email !!!!

You say the "democratic party" stands for something right Howard Dean? Lets see it stand for something real and authentic then & not more of the same old "I need your donations!!!" by blowing the official smoke-screen out of the water on the voting machines, once and for all!!!!!!

DIEBOLD & Sequoia are facing numerous lawsuit prosecutions in court!!!! This is the story of the CENTURY-if-the-year-was-again-1775 in fact!!!!

OUR ELECTIONS ARE A GOD DAMN SHAM!!!!! And where the hell is the democratic party at, or the republicans for that matter!?!?? Screaming like greedy fools for donations!!!!! ENOUGH OF THE BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OUR ELECTIONS ARE CONTROLLED BY FAR LEFT & RIGHT NEOCON COMPANIES OWNED BY FOREIGN SPIES, AND NO ONE SEEMS TO GIVE A DAMN!!!!!!!!!

Let’s throw the baby out with the bathwater shall we? STAND UP AND SHOUT FOR TRANSPARENT, AUDITED VOTING MACHINES!!!!! EVERYTHING ELSE IS A HOAX

    http://www.bradblog.com/archives/00002203.htm

When a republican steals the presidential election no one seems to give a damn or same if a democrat steals a governor's seat. BUT WHEN MICKEY MOUSE, OR GOD FORBID AN INDEPENDENT GETS ELECTED WHO NO ONE'S HEARD OF EVERYONE SCREAMS THEIR HEAD OFF!!!!

Well then for the last time it is time to END private, criminal enterprises counting the votes once and for all and institute REAL election reform once and for all, I have said it over 50 thousand times....Will this be the one where the democratic party or the leaders finally listen!??!??!

Let me give you a hint: HERES ALL YOU NEED TO SAY!

"In our commitment to the 50 state strategy and providing transparent government, we will not allow any longer for unaudited counting machines used by private corporations holding proprietary secret software to count our nation's votes. All 50 states will fight with our organizers to raise
money, guidance, and the knowledge to remove un-auditable machines from our voting. For only a transparent government is a trustworthy government. Non-transparency leads to questions, crime, and soaked corruption. We will never allow that which is why I'm leading this in all 50 states across the country to have verified paper ballots."

That wasn't hard!!!! And as for NINE-ELEVEN......this is to all you legislatures: It is time, for an official audit of World Trade Center 7. Based on the results of this investigation below, it is clear that nine-eleven has never been solved and we need to know what actually happened that day and what Larry Silverstein had to do with it...once and for all.

Finally I say again, please do not allow Dennis Hastert to set the agenda for Congress!!! Go out all of you democrats get out in front of the capital building and protest by showing up for work instead of waiting until January 31st!! You republicans should get out there too, what Hastert is doing is trying to do a favor for his corrupt, criminal friend Tom Delay. That does not mean the entire damn congress should do it too. And you all need to say enough is enough, and show up there and get to work!!! Call it what it is: The worst abuse of power in a century and for attempting to delay Congress' most important work.

    Get on the ball!
