Jews for Jesus sues Google over blog
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Christian evangelical group Jews for Jesus is suing Google Inc., saying a Web log hosted through the Internet search leader's Blogspot service infringes its trademark.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in New York on Wednesday, seeks to force Google to give Jews for Jesus control of the site as well as unspecified monetary damages.

"We have a right to our own name and Google has allowed the use of our name on Blogspot without our permission," said Susan Perlman, associate executive director with Jews for Jesus.

"Our reputation is at stake," Perlman told Reuters.

3. Okay, that's just ludicrous
I can call my blog JesusChrist.blogspot.com if I want to. A blog address has no more to do with trademark than a screenname on DU.

Losers.

4. I have never gotten "Jews for Jesus"
This is the epitome of oxymoron. As a Jew I am offended that they would call themselves Jewish

19. I don't know that much about them
but in the past I've seen them at the Atlanta gay pride parade carrying signs. And that's about the only place I've encountered them, except for this post on DU

24. They hand out literature at my university.
A few days after the guys who hand out the little green new testaments start (those make great shims . . .) and a few days before the two who sell copies of the Bhagavad Gita set up their table. In between are a large variety of groups attempting to proselytize without actually doing it.

This semester we had a new tent -- "Reduce Stress" -- sponsored by the scientologist's.

It's like running a theological obstacle course.

11. They are exactly what they call themselves
Very early in its history, Christianity turned away from its Jewish roots and worked to attract Gentile converts. This is why Christianity has never enforced Jewish dietary laws, strict observance of the Sabbath, etc.

Jews For Jesus got its start as part of the "Jesus Freak" movement of the 1960s. Essentially, they are a very fundamentalist Christian group -- they have frequently been called a cult -- that mandates a strict observance of Old Testament directives. Strictly speaking, they are not Jewish, as they reject the Talmud and other developments of Jewish theology that appear outside of the Tanak. They are much more closely related to the Seventh Day Adventist and Jehovah's Witnesses. Think, if you will, extremist Biblical literalists.

12. Plus, it's free on Blogspot
It wouldn't have cost them any money...

I wonder if they didn't ask Blogger to remove it... generally Google/Blogger is very sensitive to trademark and copyright issues...

22. Not really
SLAPP suits are filed against litigants that don't have much money in order to hurt or bankrupt them.

Google is flush with cash- and it's going to cost "Jews for Jesus" bigtime to try to fight them.

29. But the real target is the blogger, rather than Google.
They're counting on Google, rich or not, not wanting the hassle and deleting the blog. Big companies may be able to afford litigation, but they sure as hell don't WANT it.

I seriously suspect they're wrong about Google, but SLAPP was the original intention.

14. Yep, JfJ is really a fundamentalist Christian church in disguise
They pretend to be a Jewish organization to convert wavering people or those who never had much acquaintance with their faith. Then it turns out they're Christians. Someone once called them "the greatest fraud ever perpetrated upon the Jewish people." I don't know about greatest, but it has to be on the list.

That goofy right-wing lawyer Jay Sekulow from Pat Robertson's fake-ass ACLJ is one of them.

He stink.

I strolled through there on my way from evangelical to Judaism to where I am now.

on edit: And yes, those are oxymorons. That's why that was a quick detour on my spiritual journey.

27. Many years ago......
I work with Jews for Jesus in a second hand capacity. At that time they used to come to a facility called the Seattle Lutheran Bible Insitute to do outreach evangelism. They had a Christian Music Ensemble named the Liberated Wailing Wall not too bad of a group musically. They are a segment of people of Jewish heritage that believe that Jesus is Lord and Saviour and that he is the Messiah. They believe in a second coming. Their theology is a bit on the Fundamentalist side of things. They used be headquartered out of San Rapheal, California.

which believe are Messianic. From all I can gather, Messianic Jews still observe the Holy Days but very few celebrate christmas.

32. Jews for Jesus is a group of people also known as messianic Jews
These people are Jews in that they trace their lineage back to Abraham. Many of them tend to keep much of the old laws of Judaism (things like circumcision, observance of the sabbath, kosher laws, Jewish holidays, and other such customs). They are messianic in that they believe that Jesus of Nazereth was in fact the messiah.

One might say that that is impossible, but then again there are many atheists who consider themselves Jews. Why not these people?
