Powell defends rendition, says practice is not new

LONDON (Reuters) - Rendition, the controversial practice of moving terrorism suspects from one country to another, is not new and European governments should not be surprised by it, Colin Powell said on Saturday.

...

"Most of our European friends cannot be shocked that this kind of thing takes place," Powell told BBC World.

"The fact that we have, over the years, had procedures in place that would deal with people who are responsible for terrorist activities, or suspected of terrorist activities.

"And so the thing that is called rendition is not something that is new or unknown to my European friends."

4. I don't think they can seriously deny sending terrorism suspects
to countries which engage in torture.

Innocent people who endured that have since been freed and spoken out.

6. They HAVE denied it.
The administration has been quite adamant that they do not torture nor participate in rendition.

It isn't the right thing to do. What happened to ya, Powell? Guess we never really knew ya.

8. it's not a matter of it being new, you corrupt piece of shit
it's a matter of it being wrong

If America was engaging in things legal and ethical the extradition procedures would be used.

I have no doubt he would know about it and approve of it.

The problem is, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE DID NOT KNOW ABOUT IT. And no, I do NOT approve of it.

of the American people...why not torture them here, Colin? If it's so "OK", then no one will mind...

14. President of the US, G.W.Bush, is against
the Constitution of the United States of America. Bush is against the Geneva Convention and international law. Anyone who supports this lawless president is a traitor. Period.

15. Gassing people is not new, it has been done before
I can just imagine Eichmann using that as an excuse at his trial, saying that the British gassed the Iraqis to put down the 1920 rebellion.

17. Powell's 15 minutes are over. He needs to shut up.
Powell either has to come clean and tell the truth, as the ultimate insider, about Fascist BushCo, or shut up. He needs to do something positive to help and serve his country, not just clear his own besmirched name & reputation. Its NOT all about Powell, although he apparently thinks it is, since he seems to be so heavily guilt-ridden. I don't want to give Powell too much credit because he is so loathsome & pathetic, but there's almost something of a Shakespearean-type character about him --- the tragedy of someone who rose so high and who could have had it all and who threw it all away to serve Evil.

23. Since we don't torture (wink, wink) what's the point
of schlepping people here, there and everywhere in a private jet? No need to give them the grand tour if we don't torture (wink, wink).
