HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong police fought running street battles and fired volleys of tear gas on Saturday to repel hundreds of protesters trying to force their way into a building where world trade ministers were meeting.

Nine hundred protesters were rounded up on one road in the area, Police Commissioner Dick Lee told a late-night news conference. Asked if they would be arrested, he said "they will be handled according to the law."

1. Protestors break through barriers at World Trade talks

Hundreds of protesters broke through police lines and came within meters of the convention center where the World Trade Organization is meeting.

Hong Kong police fought back with pepper spray and tear gas.

In the most serious confrontation seen during this week's World Trade Organization conference, some of the thousands of protesters snatched steel traffic barriers and used them as battering rams to break through police lines Saturday evening.

As they ran to within a few meters of the WTO's meeting site, police fired tear gas containers and battered protesters with batons.

2. Focusing on violent extremists is a disservice
The protesters raise many pertinent issues. They question the social value of globalization. By painting all protestors as extremist, and illustrating it by magnifying isolated acts and making them seem commonplace, we lose sight of the issues and concentrate on the headlines.
