Taliban executes teacher in front of his pupils for educating girls
Taliban insurgents in southern Afghanistan have executed a school teacher in front of his pupils for refusing to comply with warnings to stop educating girls.

.......

Pupils at the school said two armed men arrived by motorcycle. "They dragged the teacher from the classroom and shot him at the school gate," said Abdul Rahman Sabir, Helmand's police chief.

"He had received many warning letters from the Taliban to stop teaching, but he continued to do so happily and honestly - he liked to teach boys and girls." He identified the teacher by the single name of Laghmani.

Under the Taliban interpretation of Islamic Sharia law female education was banned, along with female employment. Since the overthrow of the Taliban government by the US-led invasion of 2001, the Afghan government claims six million Afghan children have returned to school, many of them girls. However, Taliban insurgents in the south have repeatedly targeted schools, burning many to the ground at night or issuing beatings or warnings to teachers.

Then again, Republicans have always wanted to put women back into the kitchen full-time.

Only the criterion was whether or not you supported self-determination and independence, and a fair shake for the poor. We killed teachers, mayors, medical personnel. Sold missiles to Iran, and with the money funded cold-blooded murder.

Or the CACI/Bushite hit squads in Iraq, for that matter. Gangsters. Enforcers. Men with guns.

Reaganites.
Bushites.
Taliban.

6. A Horrific Story
...but no better demonstration of the incompetence of the PNAC Administration exists. We went to war, declared victory, and scuttled off (for the most part)--yet outside of the capital, the Taliban still rules and nothing has changed. It's like we were never there, except for all the dead...and those soldiers still there, for whatever purpose.

If your local rag doesn't run this story, ask them why the hell not. Too many people think Afghanistan is doing just hunky-damn-dory now thanks to Unca George.

15. Fucking hell.
The complete and utter disregard for the future of Afghanistan is heartbreaking.

FYI RAWA is as strong and incredible as ever - http://www.rawa.org / (the top link - "The ?Miracle? or a Mockery of Afghanistan?" about Republican candidate Diane Tebelius' October article is well worth a read:

"A few days ago Ms. Tebelius returned to the United States from Kabul, I am writing these notes as a response to her dreadful article from inside my trampled country. As a member of RAWA, I had to be in several provinces to meet as many people as possible regarding the elections. Tebelius can enjoy the luxury of sitting in her house and so easily call the disgusting mockery of an election ?the miracle of Afghanistan?, while I am crying from among the people in the hell of the Taliban and Northern Alliance (NA) terrorists and their ?westernized? accomplices. Tebelius and other election observers with their bullet-proofs and body guards were in the hands of the American soldiers and Afghan agents. She might have been told about ?swift spreading democracy?, ?prosperity?, ?complete security? and other ?miracles? in our land of warlords and payees of foreign powers. On the other hand since she was selected by the U.S. government that brought Karzai and the Northern Alliance to the scene, it comes as no surprise she is not calling a spade a spade."

35. Bu$h abandoned the mission.
Actually, the corporate cabal never made a real effort in Afghanistan.

The military operation against the real enemy was a complete joke.

We should have had at least 2 US divisions guarding the border with Pakistan, and a real US effort to flush out and destroy Bin Laden and the Taliban. What we got was a joke of an operation, with hired warlords, and the Pakistanis trusted to catch their cousins coming across the border. But the cabal was fixated on attacking Iraq even before 9-11, so our forces could not be spared to attack the real enemy.

Every American should be outraged. But 37% or more are totally oblivious to the truth because of corporate brainwashing (Faux,MSRNC, etc.)

40. I don't think tens of thousands of more
American troops is the answer to Afghanistan. I think a much larger Americans presence in Afghanistan will just make matters worse.

Also, the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan is over 1,000 miles long and often through jagged mountains. The idea that we could put two divisions of troops on the border and seal it looks like American arrogance to me.

As is the idea that America should be able to wipe out the vestiges of the most fundamentalist rule in the world in a few years.

Even if everything goes pretty well in Afghanistan, it will be generations before the Taliban are powerless.

Is it just an American trait that we think everything should be accomplished in a year? Seems pretty silly, but I guess in the era of cellphones and sitcoms, it's what people are used to

26. Extreme Christian Fundies not far behind....
they have be waging a war on education for years. Attacking science, and creating a male/female home school education that returns females to a subservient role in society as a mother and "wife", dictating what subjects can be learned and what clothes are to be worn. They teach that the male is head of household and is to be obeyed. (this is in extreme Christian households mind you not representative of the vast majority of Christians)

The Taliban shows what happens to a society when religion is allowed to dictate policy.

30. Not quite--the Shiites want to establish an Iranian-type government
which while repressive to women (compulsory hijab after age 9, restrictions on contact between the sexes, etc.) does allow girls and women to go to school and work at most jobs (sometimes under restrictions).

Some Afghan girls who belong to the ethnic group that speaks a language related to Farsi (I forget which one that is) actually went to Iran as refugees so that they could continue their education.

Basically, the Taliban are so far off the extremist map that even the Iranians think they're crazy.

48. 2 more school shootings in Afghanistan..student and janitor.
http://www.thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?secti...

Men on a motorcycle opened fire yesterday on students leaving school in volatile southern Afghanistan, killing a pupil and a janitor, a provincial official said.

The attack in Lashkargah, capital of insurgency-hit Helmand province, comes two days after a schoolteacher was shot dead in the province in what President Hamid Karzai condemned as an act of terrorism. No one claimed responsibility for either attack.

Helmand deputy provincial governor Moheedin Khan said after yesterday’s shooting: “We don’t know who carried out the attack but definitely they’re the enemies of Afghanistan.” Afghan officials use the term to refer to insurgents, including those from the ultra-conservative Taleban movement toppled in a US-led invasion in late 2001.

“The enemies of Afghanistan must understand that their evil acts won’t close doors on schools in our country.” The violence has left more than 1,500 people dead this year alone.
