US soldier dies in Iraq as Bush says 'no retreat'
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L03568417.htm

BAGHDAD, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Faced with a mounting military and civilian death toll and stiffening guerrilla resistance, President George W. Bush vowed on Monday that the United States would not run from its "vital" mission in Iraq.

Hours after Bush's pledge in a speech in Alabama, a U.S. soldier was killed and one wounded by a home-made bomb near Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, the U.S. military said.

This brought to at least 252 the number of U.S. soldiers killed by hostile fire since the U.S.-led invasion on March 20. The number of Iraqis killed is in the thousands and steadily climbing.

In Baghdad, an explosion echoed across the city after dark, followed by three mortar blasts near the headquarters of the U.S.-led administration in Iraq. U.S. officials said there were no reports of casualties.

3. What is wrong
with this guy? I mean really, it seemed to be quite OBVIOUS to me from the start (in 2000) that his guy wasn't too bright. But I think a lot of his current popularity (if you can call it that) is that people identify with him as a 'common guy.' If he's such a 'common guy' then why was he AWOL for a year? Why can't he level with the American people. The wool job the admin. is putting over on the American people is astounding. Can't wait till Next year to vote him out!

8. You're definitely onto something
That "average Joe" appeal is real. I hope eventually more people realize the presidency is not a job for the mediocre.

5. BRING EM ON
Hope he had a nice meal tonight.

The mother of this soldier is going to have a lot of bad days of indigestion, when she is told her child is dead for oil.

9. Absurd misconceptions

<"The enemy in Iraq believes America will run. That's why they're willing to kill innocent civilians, relief workers, coalition troops. America will never run," Bush said, despite falling approval ratings in the United States over the war.>

Nations don't run. People do. The actions of Nations are based on cold calculation and have nothing to do with running or "cowardice." When it appears that the costs exceed the likelihood of success of the alleged goals, well led nations seek another course. Images of running in the face of fire projected by the propaganda machine are meant to taint critics of a stupid policy based upon greed, ignorance and fraud as cowards. The unpatriotric and treason labels have finally been rendered ineffective by some of the democratic leaders and candidates, so now critics are "runners" in the face of enemy fire.

As for the goals of the guerilla fighters who kill civilians and attack outsiders (aid organizations and foreign soldiers), this is a recognizable pattern that emerges during conflict in the Arab world. Commerce as usual will not be allowed to occur until the offending power is removed. A regime which cannot create conditions of order conducive to commerce and relative prosperity never earns legitimacy in Arab eyes. The target audience is the Arab mainstream who is being convinced by the politicized caste that nothing resembling normalcy will be allowed to take place as long as Americans are in Iraq.

<"The mission in Iraq is vital," Bush added. But he did not refer to the downing of the helicopter or three other deaths which made Sunday the second worst day overall for the Americans of the conflict. At least 20 U.S. soldiers were wounded.>

Nor did he state what that mission was. As long as the mission is unstated, then evaluation of policy based upon measurement of the achievement or likelihood of achievement of that mission's goal is not possible. The goal now which is undefined has pretty much morphed into the war on terror in propaganda terms. This is because our original goals were bogus and the backup goal removal of the bathist regime hasn't even been accomplished. The war on terror mission means nothing since resistance fighting against an invader has nothing to do with international terror. The failure to define a mission means all that the mission can really be is the subjugation of a people and the seizing of its markets, resources and bases. In a word the mission is colonialism.

So much for "free trade" and "democracy" in the middle east.
