Democrats to use newspapers, mobile displays for anti-Schmidt campaign

The Democratic National Party is abandoning plans to try to buy billboards near U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt's district offices in Portsmouth and Cincinnati, and will instead buy ads in newspapers in her district as well as rent a mobile billboard to drive around the district.

The DNC initially tried to purchase billboards chiding Schmidt for comments she made last month on the floor of the U.S. House that implied fellow Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., was a "coward" for wanting to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq. She later withdrew the remarks and apologized.

"Shame on You Jean Schmidt," the proposed billboard read in part.

The Lamar Advertising Co. initially rejected the ad for being "too negative," but later agreed to run the billboard if Democrats enlarged a disclaimer announcing that Democrats had paid for the ad. Democrats refused.

1. Prediction:
The newspapers solicited for the advertising will find something that disqualifies the ads and will refuse to run them.

2. Democrats need to have their own billboard company.
Eventually, things will be so polarized that everything will be partisan.
