FDA is urged to halt sale of RU-486 (the abortion pill)

Conservatives are attempting to build on recent successes in the regulation of contraceptives and reproductive products by pushing the Food and Drug Administration on a new target: RU-486, the abortion pill.

Bolstered by news that four California women died after using the drug, they are calling for an end to sales. Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, a leading opponent of RU-486, says the FDA has told him it would restrict sales if additional deaths it is examining turn out to be linked to the pill.

"Increasingly, they are aware that it is a dangerous drug," DeMint said in an interview.

Of the chances that the FDA will halt sales, he said, "I'm very hopeful

there are risks with any medication. if we bent to every whim, no medicines would be available.

obviously RU-486 is a very special case, and as such, the examination of this particular medication must be taken very slowly and carefully. there is no reason to bow to reactionists... they are knee-jerkers.

4. Then either let civil (frivolous) product liability lawsuits go forward

towards the manufacturers of RU-486 or ban another pharmaceutical, say VIAGRA, since some men have been known to die from heart attacks as a side effect from its ingestion.

How many have died from Celebrex? Claritan? Viagra? Diovan?

What's that you say? None of those drugs prevent Pweshush Widdle Bay-Bees from being borned?

If there was ONE death out 100,000,000 used, the Fundies would STILL be screaming about how "deadly" it is.
