Liberal group ads targeting Hayworth's Iraq stance
Nov. 27, 2005 12:00 AM
Beginning Monday, a liberal group says it will run cable-TV spots in the Valley targeting Rep. J.D. Hayworth, R-Ariz., for his opposition to an immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.
Eight GOP lawmakers nationally are being hit in the ads from MoveOn.org Political Action.
Tom Matzzie, Washington director of the group, said Hayworth was selected because of his role as "the architect" of the controversial Republican response to Pennsylvania Democratic Rep. John Murtha's call on Nov. 17 for a troop withdrawal at the earliest "practicable date."
Hayworth came up with the idea for the Republican-led House to arrange a quick vote the next day on an "immediate" end to U.S. troop deployment in Iraq. But Matzzie and Democrats have called that non-binding resolution a cheap political stunt that distorted Murtha's intention and, in Matzzie's words, "debased" meaningful debate about withdrawing troops from Iraq. The vote was 403 against immediate withdrawal, and 3 in favor.

REP. J.D. HAYWORTH, (R) Arizona:
Our friends on the left, advocates of big government, say, the Washington bureaucrats do it. Let's put bureaucrats in charge of the pharmacies. Let's put the bureaucrats in charge of the plans." We say, "no, let's insure freedom of choice. Give seniors choice. Let them decide what is best." Mr. Speaker, my colleagues --simply stated -- the plan on the left would fill the medicine bottles of America with red tape. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/congress/jan-june00/perscription_6-28.html
