AMERICAN BUSINESS LEADER URGES PRIME MINISTER TO STOP SEAL HUNT
AMERICAN BUSINESS LEADER URGES PRIME MINISTER TO STOP SEAL HUNT AND AVOID DAMAGE TO CANADIAN ECONOMY

WASHINGTON (November 22, 2005) – In a letter to Prime Minister Paul Martin released today, famous financial and business leader Edward A. Kangas warned that continuing the annual commercial seal hunt could bring ruin to Canada’s fisheries economy and the viability of that nation’s fisheries. Kangas, former global chairman and CEO of Deloitte & Touche and currently a member of the Board of Directors of four New York Stock Exchange companies, cited the increasing success of a boycott of Canadian seafood, instituted by The Humane Society of the United States, as a major factor in the multi-million dollar losses suffered by the commercial fishing industry.

Two thirds of Canadian seafood is exported to the United States, producing $2.8 billion annually for the Canadian economy and making the industry a viable target for a boycott.

Undeniable cruel, the annual commercial seal hunt, which results in the clubbing deaths of hundreds of thousands of baby seals, is an off-season activity conducted by commercial fishermen from Canada’s East Coast. Even in Newfoundland, where more than 90 percent of the sealers live, sealing income accounts for less than one percent of that province’s gross domestic product and under three percent of the landed value of Newfoundland’s fishery.

5. REALLY- I thought they stopped that years ago!! it's barbaric & primitive
Cave men use clubs on defenseless creatures-
it's Terror ism by definition-

-there is no need for taking seal fur in these :"modern times":
and if they are killing the seals just because the seals eat the fish that's even worse.

6. i think this is payback for Canada's anger at Softwood Lumber Tribunal

being ignored. I mean - why this week? On the other hand, i cannot belive they have not come up with a way to "cull" seals, as culling happens all over north America to other species, in a more human way. I mean what is it they do to Cows in the slaughterhouse?

Be that as it may. I doubt very much the head of the NY Stock Exchange has grown a conscience. The Bushbots desperately want the neocons in Canada to win the next election and they only have a few months to mess with us - cause we don't like the conservatives and they have hit a ceiling they cannot get beyond.. meaning they will not win even a minority in the next election.

The fish industry is all the Atlantic vote. And they swing conservative sometimes.

Gee - it seemed like only last year the conservative leader, Harper, was in Newfoundland playing the federal government off Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. I guess this is to be an annual or election year thing - messing with our internal politics.

Please, please tell me the head of the NY Stock exchange is a well known member of Peta or the Sierra Club and this is all a bad dream. And that he really cares about furry animals. Please tell me there is a longstanding hatred of all forms of cruelty. Please tell me his wife never wears a fur coat.

Please tell me I am wrong!

Canada's Removal of Anti-Seal Minister Leaves Hope Of Honest Negotiations

Friday Harbor, Washington (PRWEB) November 22, 2005 -- Today marks a red letter day for anti-sealers as John "Kill 'em all" Efford, the Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador resigned his position after mounting public and political pressure to do so.

"The end of the political career of John Efford may help Canada adopt a more reasonable and mature attitude towards the seals,” says Captain Watson, Founder and President of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS), a marine wildlife conservation organization founded in 1977. “We are happy that the Canadian Government decided to replace Minister Efford, as it was impossible to enter into serious discussions regarding seals when the touted his resolution to exterminate the seals."
