Graham, McCain warn 2006 could be tough year for Republicans

(Mount Pleasant-AP) November 21, 2005 - Two Republican senators warn their party could face a tough round of congressional elections next year.
Arizona Senator John McCain joined South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham Sunday at a fund-raiser for South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster.

The two say the war in Iraq, higher energy costs and out-of-control government spending could hurt Republicans in the coming elections.

McCain says the party can recover in time for the mid-term elections. But, he and Graham say, there will have to be changes. Both senators say a return to financial responsibility is key.

4. I just am not ready to be optimistic yet
I'm not pessimistic either, but this White House has control of the whole federal government, and that allows them to play a lot more tricks than we as Democrats are capable of playing. True, maybe some of those tricks won't work, but that's betting the farm on a whole lot.

So many people out there just eat up anything this White House puts out there like little doggie biscuits.

An example: Bush remains mired in the 30's through next year, and then announces a major pullout of troops from Iraq and then declares "victory". Then of course, Americans and our corporate media shower Bush with praise and credit for "ending" the Iraq war (that he started and fucked up all by himself). That gets him back up around 50%, and Republicans are able to hold their losses down, or even make small gains in 2006.

even though a clear majority of Americans disapprove of this president today, I'm convinced that many American WANT to support him, because it makes them feel patriotic to support the president. They like feeling like they are going with the flow, and being in the majority. I think many of these people would be happy to go back to being quiet Bush supporters, even if it means giving him credit for ending a war that he initiated, falsified, fucked up and maintained.

5. They still control the machines
So they certainly won't lose as much as they would if we still had fair and free elections. They'll take a couple of big hits just for show and do 'surprisingly' well otherwise.

7. When your polls are in the 20's, even machines can't save you...
It would just be too obvious :-)

10. We need to raise the profile of the Environment
and what this gang of shit weasles is doing to destroy it. A mere glance at the bills sponsored by the life hating Richard Pombo says it all. Americans overwhelmingly support more protection and preservation by all polls. Is this not a fine shaft to put in our quiver?

13. Kinda hard to respect folk who give themselves a raise in the midst of...
...financial crisis.

"Both senators say a return to financial responsibility is key."

They could start with a repeal of their automatic raise - I despise people who feed at the trough while the American people are hurting. They could follow with a cut on military spending, since it ISN'T making us safer, and we don't need to be spending more than the ENTIRE REST OF THE WORLD COMBINED! They might try cutting costs OTHER than those that support the poor and disabled, who have shouldered almost ALL of the cuts thus far. They can gut the Department of Homeland Security, which has proven itself inept, corrupt, and filled with incompetent cronies.

When they do those things, then we might start to talk.

17. Republikans have been trying to bankrupt Americas for twenty years:

... from 1980 when Reagan came into office to 1992 when Bush I left, the debt went from $1 trillion to $4 trillion ... Since 2000 when Bush II came into the white house, the debt went from $5.5 trillion to $8 trillion ...
