Vice president heckled by anti-war protesters in Tenn
Vice president heckled by anti-war protesters in Tenn.
By Duncan Mansfield, Associated Press | November 15, 2005

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Vice President Dick Cheney was heckled by peace protesters Tuesday as he spoke at the groundbreaking for a public policy center honoring former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker.

During Cheney's brief remarks, about a half-dozen people protesting the war in Iraq yelled, "War, what is it good for?" and held up a large banner saying, "Peace Now."

Cheney continued speaking and didn't acknowledge the protesters, who were escorted from the ceremony inside the University of Tennessee's basketball arena.

About 50 protesters, most of them appearing to be college age, demonstrated outside the arena. Several carried signs, including one that read "Honor Baker, Impeach Cheney."

1. They should start throwing things.
Not rocks or bottles, but maybe eggs or ripe tomatoes. Everywhere he goes, he gets pelted with produce.

23. That's a very interesting ethical dilemma.
To anyone: "Would you give bush a blowjob if it meant that our troops would come home from Iraq?"

Is it a tough choice or not? ;)

43. You guys have it all wrong...
My old gunny told us "If a grenade comes into your position.. don't jump on it and be a hero. Grab somebody smaller than you, throw him on it, and make HIM the hero."

We gotta figure out somebody we could coerce to play *'s skin flute.

During Watergate, the fed investigators threatened John Dean by telling him the bad boys in the joint will think he's cute. As more indictments come down in this misadministration, all we have to do is find a "volunteer" to do Bush once, rather than a cellblock full of nameless minority cons for 2 to 5 years.

Problem solved.

18. That doesn't make sense, they aren't protesting peace????
They are protesting the War or the administration, but they certainally couldn't be protesting peace because we don't have peace to protest, we have a war to protest and an administration that got us into an elective war to protest.

They need hecklers occasionally to let them know they aren't universally worshipped. Otherwise, they might think they are doing the right thing.

27. Right -- That's the way the language and its use and misuse works.
Anti-war and peace would have the same meaning when used in that context. I have probably heard it a million times and never thought anything of it. Just this time it struck me as peculiar.

It is like a person complementing their host at the end of a party saying: "I enjoyed myself." You would think they would have stayed home to enjoy themselves and would have enjoyed the company of other people at the party.

This is hijacking the thread, so I won't respond to any more splitting hairs over word use.

Wanders off muttering to self: Who in their right mind would protest peace, don't we all want peace... are some people so angry that they have to have war to be happy? Who are those people? Didn't they have a happy childhood? Would anger management help them? ...

We of a certain age remember Howard well, he of the immortal question, "What did the President know, and when did he know it?"

He defiles the man with his presence.

7. This was on CNN for about 20 seconds....

They didn't show the protestors, but you could hear a number of people shouting out. Couldn't understand what they were saying, and the camera stayed on Cheney the whole time.

Still, CNN was reporting it because of the protestors, and that was reflected in the headline on the screen.

Pretty good coverage compared to what usually happens.

14. Encouraging sign
I've been concerned that protests against the Iraq war would never really take off among the youth unless they instituted a draft. Let's face it, a half-dozen students don't constitute a huge crowd. But in Tennessee, even in a college town, that's probably pretty good. So there does seem to be a movement growing.

Keep it up, young people! You are the future!
