LAT: Fox News displays a green side (will air global warming documentary)
Fox News displays a green side
With the help of Laurie David, the top-rated news network will air a special report on global warming.
By Matea Gold, Times Staff Writer

NEW YORK—It's no surprise that environmental activists Laurie David and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are involved in a new documentary about global warming airing this Sunday. But the fact that the special was produced by Fox News is more unexpected.

The top-rated cable news channel has long rejected its reputation for having a conservative slant. Nevertheless, the network's involvement in the special has pleased environmentalists and piqued some conservatives, who have lobbed an unusual criticism of the network: that its program only offers a liberal viewpoint on the issue.

"The Heat Is On: The Case of Global Warming," which airs on Fox News Sunday at 5 and 8 p.m., is devoted to assessing the effect humans have had on the environment. Hosted by anchor Rick Folbaum, the one-hour show, which includes interviews with top scientists about evidence of climate change, offers practical tips on how to conserve energy and features a trip David and Kennedy took to Montana's Glacier National Park.

Bill Shine, the network's senior vice president for programming, said Fox decided to do the special because global warming is a significant news story....

***

But there's no question that global warming is also a politically charged topic, and the network's approach to it is being carefully scrutinized. The Competitive Enterprise Institute, a free-market think thank based in Washington, D.C., wrote a letter to the network this week complaining about Kennedy's involvement in the project....

5. I get so sick of this.
"its program only offers a liberal viewpoint on the issue"

This is science for God's sake, not politics. This shouldn't be about what political slant it has (real science doesn't have a political slant, it's about facts about the physical world). It should be about accuracy. Does it, or does it not, present an accurate view of current scientific findings. There are no "sides" to it. It isn't a competition. It's not a high school debating club. Accurate reporting doesn't mean balance simply for the sake of balance. It doesn't mean presenting an opposing viewpoint simply because it exists. Accurate reporting means ACCURATE REPORTING.
Sorry, I had to get that rant out. This kind of stupidity really gets to me. :argh: :grr: :banghead:

So I wonder what's up with Faux. Why are they showing this? Could it be that this program really isn't as accurate and honest as is being portrayed? Could the whole conservative outrage thing be a fake-out to make us believe it's a genuine honest documentary? Will this program end up giving us some nonsense about "natural cycles" and "civilization's contribution to it is in question"?

Fox News' Global Warming Special: Putting the Conserve Back into Conservatism

A Fox News Special “The Heat is On: The Case of Global Warming” airing this Sunday at 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. EST, documents the devastating impacts that global warming is already having on our planet. In one segment of the show, I accompany a Fox News crew to Glacier National Park in Montana where only 27 of the 150 glaciers that graced the park in 1850 remain--and these will be gone within our generation.
The portrayal of global warming in Fox’s piece is both fair and accurate.

I spent a summer in a tent in Africa with Roger Ailes in 1973 making a wildlife film. He is charming, affable, very smart, and very, very funny. Although we both believe that each other’s politics are misguided, we have remained friends for three decades. Last year, I asked Roger, as a personal favor, to attend Al Gore’s New York City update on global warming science. Although he left that presentation still agnostic, he was convinced that the debate deserved a public airing. I argued that since there is no such thing as Republican or Democratic children, global warming should not be a partisan but only a scientific issue. The Fox News team did a superb job exploring the science. This film should be seen be everyone. The end product goes a long way toward putting the conserve back into conservatism.

11. Ratings
Fox thinks like a low-level conservative American. It run polls continuously to watch for any emerging tiny trend and stick to it. So, when your idiot neighbor, who voted for the Idiot, appears to be concerned about the warming weather, Fox-the-fox gives him something. The idiot neighbor would zap to the Weather Channel for an hour a day otherwise and the cost of a commercial second would go down proportionally. It's like fishing.

13. This means 2 things
1) Media whoring at its best: throwing their support behind the winning team (as Bush and co are plummeting harder than the illfated dot.com companies).

and/or

2) Realization of the gravity of this global warming situation: It's a sure issue, despite resistance from the major energy companies. Many can stay in denial for so long before DOOM looks at them in the face and cannot be ignored. It's like some people who deny that there's an upcoming asteroid threat, but they change tunes when there is no doubt that there's an asteroid coming their way within the near future.

14. Okay, I'm pleasantly surprised.
First, I didn't know Fox even read anything Kennedy would've written, much less understood it.

Secondly, to produce a film like this, well, lets just say, it will help their ratings. Once they notice that people will tune in to what they actually care about, they MAY??? offer up more "reality" even if it's just for their ratings.

Can't hurt. We need to educate people.

Pretty much non-stop. They can show three hours of one way and endless hours of punditary the other way bashing this.
