LA Daily News: Nissan to flee L.A. area
Nissan to flee L.A. area

By Rose French, Associated Press
LA Daily News

Nissan Motor Co. announced Thursday it is moving its North American headquarters and nearly 1,300 jobs from California to the Nashville area to take advantage of the lower cost of doing business in the Southeast.

"The board of Nissan decided to relocate our North American headquarters, and we're coming to Tennessee," Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said at a news conference at the state Capitol attended by Gov. Phil Bredesen and other top state officials.

The headquarters, which has been based in Gardena, will relocate to Williamson County, a suburban area south of Nashville.

Industry analysts say the move could threaten Southern California's dominance as a hub for Japanese automakers and strengthen the Southeast's standing as a major manufacturing center for automakers.

3. The envelope please .... Toyota selects Toronto
I'm sure this move pleases Bushco. I'm certain that Nissan's move is almost a coup for Bush.

California is a lost cause to the Repugs. Tennessee isn't.

5. Lower real estate costs & taxes, as well as workers' salaries.
Nissan expects about 1/2 of their LA workforce to transfer.
Although it will be a culture shock, imagine the huge upgrade in housing - selling their LA area bungalows for 1/2 a million or more and moving to much less expensive but twice the size homes in Tennessee. The Tennessee govt. offered a nice package of tax breaks and incentives. And Nissan's first US manufacturing facility was and is in Tennessee.
