Six unions form group to fight Delphi wage cuts
By Dee-Ann Durbin / Associated Press

DETROIT -- Six unions which represent workers at Delphi Corp. said Monday they are banding together to fight proposed wage and benefit cuts at the auto supplier, an ominous sign that Delphi could face a strike as it pushes for concessions.

The unions represent 33,650 active Delphi workers. The United Auto Workers union represents the vast majority of those workers, at 24,000. Other unions in the group are the International Union of Electrical Workers-Communications Workers of America, the United Steelworkers, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and the International Union of Operating Engineers.

"Delphi's contract proposals to our unions, together with CEO Steve Miller's public statements, clearly reveal senior management's contempt and disdain for the hard-working people who have played a vital role in making Delphi the world's leading automotive parts manufacturer," the unions said in a joint statement.

The UAW hasn't publicly revealed Delphi's contract proposal. But according to a summary distributed by union members, Delphi wants to cut base wages to $9.50 to $10.50 an hour for production workers and $19 for skilled trades workers. Right now, most Delphi hourly workers make $27 an hour or more.

Unions declare war on Delphi

UAW endorses plan to slow down work
November 8, 2005

The six major industrial unions representing 33,650 hourly Delphi Corp. employees formed a coalition Monday in a solidified effort to take on the nation's largest auto parts supplier.

United Auto Workers leaders, now bolstered by the support of five other unions representing 5.5 million active and retired workers, also said that they have endorsed a work action that could slow down production at Delphi. Such a move is likely to send tremors throughout the auto industry.

The coalition is called Mobilizing@Delphi. It consists of the UAW, International Union of Electrical Workers, United Steelworkers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, and International Union of Operating Engineers.

UAW spokesman Paul Krell confirmed Monday that UAW President Ron Gettelfinger endorsed a work action that could slow down production at Delphi. The Troy-based company has proposed cutbacks in jobs, salary and benefits as it goes through bankruptcy proceedings.

3. Here we go
Delphi will go belly up and the taxpayers will be on the hook for all pensions and health care of the retirees.

Then a new company will form, buy the equipment and hire back the employees for $9.00 per hour.

Workers and taxpayers screwed.

4. Certainly looks to be heading that way.
Adios, Delphi. This will be bad for the families of their employees.
