Thousands protest across US on anniversary of Bush re-election

1 hour, 48 minutes ago

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Thousands of Americans staged noisy demonstrations across the United States to protest the policies of
President George W. Bush on the first anniversary of his re-election.

Amid a strong police presence, angry demonstrators on Wednesday chanted and waved banners and placards denouncing issues as diverse as the war in Iraq, Bush's economic polices and his administration's response to deadly Hurricane Katrina.

The protests in cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Chicago were organised by a coalition of opponents to the administration called "The World Can't Wait-Drive Out the Bush Regime" that urged employess to skip work and children to abandon classes to protest.

In the liberal West coast city of San Francisco, up to 4,000 marching protesters clogged the city's streets in a protest during which a firebomb was thrown at police. No-one was injured in the incident.....

13. Anti-Bush Protests Mark Reelection
Anti-Bush Protests Mark Reelection

NEW YORK, Nov. 2, 2005

What appeared to be thousands of
protesters rallied at New York's
Union Square. (CBS)

(CBS) This story was written by CBSNews.com's Scott Conroy.

The 22nd Amendment ensures that a new commander in chief will be sworn in on Jan. 20, 2009. But some Americans aren't willing to wait that long.

To mark the one-year anniversary of President Bush's reelection Wednesday, a group called The World Can't Wait staged rallies at sites across the United States, calling for radical change in Washington.

"We seek to create a political situation where the Bush administration's program is repudiated, where Bush himself is driven from office, and where the whole direction he has been taking U.S. society is reversed," the group, which formed last summer, said in its mission statement.

The rallies came at a time at which the Bush administration may be at its weakest point since it assumed power in 2001. The government's response to Hurricane Katrina and the rising death toll in Iraq, and the indictments of the top House Republican and a senior administration official have further emboldened the opposition. According to a CBS News poll conducted this week, Mr. Bush's job approval rating is now 35 percent, the lowest number of his presidency. Organizers of Wednesday's rallies hoped to utilize this rocky time for the Republican establishment to tap into public discontent and generate steam for their movement.

16. Protests against Bush held across US

WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- Thousands of people across the United States on Wednesday staged protests against President Goerge W. Bush's policies.

They used the anniversary of Bush's re-election to express their discontent with his policies including the war in Iraq and response to Hurricane Katrina and call for his resignation.

More than 800 Los Angeles high school students walked out of their campuses as part of a nationwide protest against Bush.

Adults accompanied groups of students "in all cases" as they left 10 high schools across the sprawling city, according to Dan Isaacs, chief operating officer of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

and from Reuters...

Thousands rally across US against Bush policies

NEW YORK, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Thousands of protesters staged rallies on Wednesday across the United States against the policies of President George W. Bush, including the war in Iraq and response to Hurricane Katrina.

The World Can't Wait organization, a coalition of groups formed recently to stage the rallies, used the anniversary of Bush's re-election to call for his resignation in protests that took place in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco and Chicago.

In New York, students walked out of schools and colleges and joined other supporters as thousands rallied in Union Square before marching nearly 2 miles (3.2 km) to Times Square along avenues lined with police on motorbikes.

"The Bush regime is out to remake the world with its policies," said organizer Sunsara Taylor. "From the war in Iraq to environmental policies to the remaking of the Supreme Court ... we are staring down the barrel of fascism in this country."

20. Done--and reporting from Seattle protest yesterday......
I suppose there were about 500 people gathered at Westlake Center, where I met up with my son who'd walked out of the UW campus with (sadly)only a few others. There were many speeches from students about Iraq and the devious recruiting practices going on in our High schools. Later more people gathered and marched without any problems, except for 1 arrest later on.
Surprisingly, the event got excellent coverage from local TV stations--it seems the msm has finally woken up.

21. My only quibble is with the term re-election,
it is impossible to be re-elected if you were never elected in the first place.

26. I think people were supposed to walk off--from work!
I'm lucky-being self employed so I can do this, but others could lose their jobs-so I understand the dilemma.
