Frist donated to campaign after HCA sale
http://www.fortwayne.com/mld/journalgazette/12944650.ht...

WASHINGTON (AP) Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist paid $72,012 from his own pocket to his 2000 re-election campaign fund in August, two months after he was notified that trustees had sold millions of dollars of his stock in HCA Inc., the hospital chain founded by his father and brother.

That Aug. 30 payment was disclosed in Federal Election Commission filings last Friday. The documents also show the campaign fund on the same day paid off a $349,107 outstanding loan from U.S. Bank Corp.

Both transactions enabled the Tennessee Republican to close the Senate campaign fund in anticipation of his retirement from the Senate next year and a possible run for the White House in 2008.

4. How do these guys get away with this kind of stuff? Most citizens
would be hauled off so fast they'd have trouble making bail.

11. think back a year or so ago - Frist story - per campaign money
something about 'loaning' money to his campaign (2000) - then delaying paying back debts from campaign.... then paying his "loan" back (to himself) before paying other campaign debts... and then maybe something about not paying some of those debts back? I can't recall the story - but it appeared to show a little bit of his lack of ethics when it comes to his money and other peoples' money.

12. I remember that as well
didn't he default on a loan to the bank and the bank forgave him for his oversight?

13. found the link
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), a self-described nonprofit progressive legal watchdog group, filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) yesterday against Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.).

CREW, whose board members include former Clinton pollster Mark Penn and wealthy Democratic donor Daniel Berger, alleges that Frist broke the law by failing to disclose a $1.44 million loan taken out by his 2000 campaign committee, Frist 2000 Inc.

Frist 2000 and Frists 1994 Senate campaign committee took out the loan jointly after the 2000 election, but only the 1994 campaign committee disclosed the loan. Frist signed the loan papers personally, according to CREW.

Frist was clearly trying to hide the fact that his 2000 campaign was over a million dollars in debt, said Melanie Sloan, CREWs executive director.

Linus Castignani, treasurer of Frists 2000 campaign, said, We have filed everything consistent with FEC regulations.

14. Great find - seems that these stories
ought to be linked in our memory. There is a pattern of financial sliminess and cavalierness about Frist. Goes deeper than the norm - given that he is rich enough to need to play so loose with his and other peoples' money. Wonder if he yet realizes his days of dreaming of a GOP pres candidacy have faded into nothingness (as in - it will be a money hole ... and a waste of time.)
