Texas Court Issues (arrest) Warrant for Tom DeLay
(10-19) 11:27 PDT Austin, Texas (AP) --

A Texas court on Wednesday issued a warrant for former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's arrest, and set an initial $10,000 bail as a routine step before his first court appearance on conspiracy and state money laundering charges.

Travis County court officials said DeLay was ordered to appear at the Fort Bend County, Texas, jail for booking, where he'd likely be fingerprinted and photographed. DeLay's lawyers had hoped to avoid such a spectacle.

80. Uh, no.
You get to call him a "defendant." You don't get to call him a CRIMINAL until after he's been convicted. I'm sure you'd want the same consideration.

131. Not in "Red" America.......
In "Red" America just the hint of committing a crime is considered a guilty sentence. They're very holy in "Red" America and are willing to pass judgment on someone immediately. Bill Clinton was automatically guilty, everyone KNEW he "did something" and had to be impeached no matter what the cost. Yes, "Red" Americans can tell a guilty person a mile away, there's no need for judge or jury.

Innocent until proven guilty is soooooo "Blue" State! :eyes:

Maybe.......no, they wouldn't do that. I was going to say that since it's a "Red American" in question that the same rules wouldn't apply. But "Red Americans" would NEVER be guilty of hypocrisy, would they? Nope, never. Not in a million years. So Tom DeLay is already guilty to "Red" Americans, right?

because he is a defendant in a criminal case as opposed to a civil case.

a beautifully colored and prepared poster of Mr. DeLay's mugshot along with his booking number and his alleged crimes. Someone is going to make a fortune. I'll have to keep my eyes open on Ebay and the "funny" web sites, I'll have to get one, frame it and display it proudly on my living room wall.

either release him on his own recognisance or set the bail at $1MM or more. i mean, $10,000 doesn't accomplish anything. if he's going to flee the country (highly unlikely, imho), he won't mind leaving the $10,000 behind.

Welcome to DU, btw.

The only thing I'm able to do with any certainty is to jump up from my computer and run into the other room where my husband's working - to share the latest updates.

Glad you're here - especially when we have a few things to celebrate! Looks like next week will be a doozy in the Plamegate department, what I think is now being referred to, with great excitement and anticipation, as "Fitzmas."

We have been wandering in the wilderness, struggling, anguished, desolate, parched, dry, thirsting and starving, for SO DAMNED LONG. What a DELICIOUS change in the political climate. It's just BEYOND GREAT to feel some hope again.

I've had that oldie running through my head - "na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na, HEY-hey-hey, GOOO-OOOOD-BYE!!!!!!"

Good to have you here to share it!

CHEERS, CHEERS, CHEERS! :toast:

Now, let's get back to work.

Visualize IMPEACHMENT!!!!!!!!!!!

And then go DO something about it.

Heading down to the garage and turn on XM satellite radio on my boom box.
Perfect (rainy Washington State) day to put another coat of varnish on the cedar picnic table I'm re-finishing and listen to AAR.
Bummer though, Randi and Big Eddy are on at the same time.
Yes, I can visualize impeachment.
I even thought about heading to town on a break and picking up a bottle of bubbly. But.... the last time I prematurely did that,
(exit polls showing Kerry elected)we all know how that turned out. I was literally sick for months and in tears.
So, I'll hold off on buying the champagne for a bit, but DAMN my throat is dry.
Thanks for the welcome Calimary!

PS. And no cheap stuff this time either, I want the sweet taste of the "finest" sliding down my throat like velvet.
Dig under the cushions and in coat pockets for the $$ to buy a bottle of Dom for the occasion. A toast with my close friends, all of us with tears of joy in our eyes. I can visualize that alright!

WASHINGTON A former Democratic congressman on Tuesday launched a national fund-raiser aimed at unseating Rep. Tom DeLay (search) next year as the former House majority leader battles an indictment and ethics charges.

74. Let's hope it's a bad SEVERAL YEARS to be a republi-CON.
They deserve an OCEAN of comeuppance. There are MULTITUDES of karmic debts to pay. And it looks like at least a few of the bills are finally coming due.

BTW, whether or not he can slither out of this one on a technicality, he will be forced to live, for the rest of his life, with the images of this event, images that thousands of bloggers and political enemies (many of whom are still smarting from their unsuccessful battles with him) will not lose track of. This will follow him around to the end of his days. Images of this, photoshops of this, leaflets of this, reprints of this, will haunt him forever. They'll be passed out at every public appearance he makes, they'll be popping up on the internet every time his name comes up, they'll be on the tip of the tongue of anyone who heckles him or any press person who does any sort of interview with him - from now until the end of time. The internet has a long memory. So do one's political enemies. Which is why, if you're in politics, you should try not to make too many. You'll ALWAYS have people lurking nearby, looking for payback if you've screwed them.

143. Golden Quotes
From the main FReeper thread:

"DeLay needs to sue this guys ass off."

"If the Texas Constitution allows it, Governor Perry should issue a full pardon for Delay now. He should then have Earle arrested for abusing his office."

"It's this kind of attitude that has gotten us NOTHING!! SCREW THAT, I'm sick of playing nice, THIS IS WAR for the SOUL of our country and I AIN'T gonna give the rats another inch!! WE need a fighting spirit, a complacent one DOESN'T cut it anymore! I want to see the rats begging us for mercy!! I'd rather blow a vein, than end up living in a RAT blue communist country!"

My favorite:

"Sometimes a figure (person, character) goes through a personal trial but in the end they become more powerful. Figures such as Azlan (Narnia), Obi-Wan Kenobi (Star Wars) come to mind."

I loved that freeper quote a few posts up that said it's time to stop playing nice ?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!?! WTF do they mean "stop playing nice"??!?!??!?!?!?! They have NEVER played nice. From the GET-GO they've NEVER played nice. They don't even know what playing nice is. Except if they'd spent any time observing our friends in their nice, pink tutus, that is.

Glad you're here.

Let's not get complacent, though. There's still an IMPEACHMENT (or maybe more than one) to undertake. This isn't over. Not by a LONG shot.

"The Senators and Representatives shall receive a compensation for their services, to be ascertained by law, and paid out of the treasury of the United States. They shall in all cases, except treason, felony and breach of the peace, be privileged from arrest during their attendance at the session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any speech or debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other place."

Bugman's lawyers are probably working on some way to claim that he is "returning from" Congress up to and including the halfway point of any visit home,a nd "going to" it from that point onward.

Arrest warrant issued for DeLay
A routine step before court appearance

This is way better than even those happy days during the Clenis era when Larry Flynt was forcing Repunks to resign by revealing juicy details of their extramarital affairs.
:woohoo:

But, hey, DeLay's arrest is just a routine step before his court appearance, so really no worries for the Rethugs.

He is almost no flight risk, and the charges are pure white collar crime. And let's be honest: would it really make any difference if bail were a million dollars? He would find that just as easy to get as ten thousand.

One of my co-workers pointed out that a low bail can actually be seen as a subtle insult, a way of saying, "You are small fish and not worth bothering about, except as a technicality." She brought up a classic Bugs Bunny cartoon where Bugs goes in to quite a tizzy, very insulted when he finds out the government is offering a bounty for rabbits... of only 2 cents.

I think it is too subtle for Texas politics, but I live in Seattle, so what do I know?

110. Texas Court Issues Warrant for DeLay
SFGate Texas court on Wednesday issued a warrant for former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's arrest, and set an initial $10,000 bail as a routine step before his first court appearance on conspiracy and state money laundering charges.

Travis County court officials said DeLay was ordered to appear at the Fort Bend County, Texas, jail for booking, where he'd likely be fingerprinted and photographed. DeLay's lawyers had hoped to avoid such a spectacle.

123. Latest in a Long Line of Delay Scandals
I can't wait to see his mugshot on www.smokinggun.com

This is only the latest among a long line of scandals involving Delay, who really was an exterminator before he went into politics.

The ONLY reason that the GOP picked up House seats in 2004 was because of Delay's unprecedented re-re-districting of the Texas Congressional districts after they had already been redistricted from the 2000 Census. This arrest warrant involves illegal campaign contributions that were used to fund that re-re-districting.

Anyone remember the Dems. in the Texas legislature having to hide across the border in Oklahoma to try to delay the re-re-districting? Delay tried to get Texas Rangers to arrest the Democrats, but they wouldn't cross the border. Then Delay called up the Dept. of Homeland Security and told them to find the Democrats' plane. Homeland Security wasn't told the reason - they thought it had something to do with tracking down terrorists.

Delay also used a phony children's charity that he set up to fund parties and cruises with big fundraisers and Republican leaders during the GOP convention in NYC. He killed the idea after it became public.

Here's a good list of all of Delay's scandals:

http://www.truthout.org/cgi-bin/artman/exec/view.cgi/37...
(scroll down half a page, that includes links for details)

Excerpts:

"DeLay has admitted offering to endorse Sen. Nick Smith's son Brad, who was running for Congress at the time, in exchange for Smith's "yea" vote on the Medicare bill.

The House ethics panel rebuked DeLay for using government resources to help locate a private plane he thought was carrying Texas Democratic legislators. DeLay was trying to force the legislators back to the capitol so he could push through his congressional redistricting."

DeLay used a children's charity, Celebrations for Children Inc., as cover for collecting soft money from anonymous interest groups, some of which was used for "dinners, a golf tournament, a rock concert, Broadway tickets and other fundraising events" at the Republican convention in New York. Because the money was supposedly for charity, companies wishing to curry favor with DeLay were able to do so without revealing themselves as campaign donors.

The House Ethics Committee cited the belief on the part of executives at an energy company, Westar Energy Inc., that a $56,500 contribution to a political action committee associated with DeLay would get them a "seat at the table" where key energy legislation was being drafted.

DeLay "took a $100,000 check from a private prison company" - the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) - at a fundraiser for his children's charity, the DeLay Foundation for Kids. CCA - whose 20-year history has been "fraught with malfeasance, mismanagement, and abuse" - was part of an ongoing lobby for a bill that would privatize up to half of Texas's jails.

In 1999, DeLay received a "private rebuke" for threatening retaliation against the Electronic Industries Association when the trade group named a Democrat to head its Washington operation.

DeLay enjoyed a luxurious vacation at the Four Seasons Hotel in London in mid-2000, paid for by an Indian tribe and a gambling services company, both of which opposed gambling legislation DeLay voted against two months later. The payment was funneled through lobbyist Jack Abramoff, best known for teaming up with right-wing religious fundamentalist Ralph Reed to close down a Texas casino operated by the Tigua Indians in 2002, then persuading the tribe to pay the two of them $4.2 million to lobby Washington lawmakers, including DeLay, to reopen it.

DeLay accepted an expense-paid trip to South Korea which, in direct violation of House rules, was paid for by a South Korean lobbying group.

DeLay and his allies in the House have sought to cripple the House Ethics Committee. The committee, which rebuked DeLay three times last year, was purged of its most "responsible" members last month and is currently "paralyzed" by a proposed rules change.

DeLay was the driving force behind the decision by House leaders to abandon an 11-year-old party rule that "required leaders to step aside temporarily if indicted."

145. Let's a bunch of us show up and stand in support of this Indictment!!
I'm in the process of finding out when DeLay will be booked.
The fine folks in Ft Bend County have been most helpful.
Both the County officials and the City officials have assured
me that we can peacefully congregate in front of the jail to
show our support of Ronnie Earle's indictment, as long as we
do not block a roadway, a sidewalk or a driveway.

I will be posting here confirmation of the date/time DeLay
will be booked--if I can get that information--and I urge as
many of you as can possibly make it to show up to peacefully
and respectfully support Ronnie Earle's indictment of this
disgusting, poor excuse for a politician.

Regards,

Cheryl Ann
