A protest by members of a radical anti-gay religious group, and threats it might set off an explosive device, failed to materialize Tuesday night when the mother of Matthew Shepard spoke at Carroll College in Helena, Montana.

Police and private security guards hired by the college were visible in high numbers.

Last week the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, led by Rev. Fred Phelps and known for its strongly worded anti-gay literature, threatened to picket the event.

7. Rev Fred is one thing we and the freepers agree on

The freepers hate him, too. More for the statements about dead soldiers than the anti-gay thing, but also for the way in which he spews his hatred of homsexuality. The freepers don't want gays dead, they just want them back in the closet so that they (the freepers) never have to deal with their own repressed impulses and desires (which don't necessarily make them gay, but they don't understand that). I also think that they truly believe that open discussion of homosexuality makes being gay contagious like, I don't know, the bird flu.
