Senate panel OKs oil drilling in Arctic refuge
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate Energy Committee voted on Wednesday to open Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling as part of a broad budget bill to fund the federal government.

Tapping the refuge's billions of barrels of crude oil is a key part of the Bush administration's national energy plan to boost domestic production. Environmental groups and many Democrats oppose drilling, saying that instead of threatening the habitat of wildlife in ANWR, lawmakers should look at ways to cut oil consumption with more fuel-efficient vehicle standards.

The energy panel approved the ANWR drilling provision, 13-9. All Republicans on the committee voted in favor of the plan, plus Democrats Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Daniel Akaka of Hawaii.

"Opening ANWR is sound public policy that would serve the country well many years into the future," said Pete Domenici, the Republican chairman of the committee. The oil produced from the wildlife refuge "would provide some cushion" for U.S. supplies, he said.

8. I agree with you
I remember John Kerry talking about an initiative like Kennedy's "we will go to the moon this century" to be put on renewable energy. This was and IS an excellent way to move forward.

We need to talk about our stewardship of the earth. Drilling in ANWR is a crappy way to care for the land.

3. Fools
It's not a blank, white sheet of paper.
It's not a 2000 acre "footprint".

People have been lied to about the effects this huge project would have on the area. It's wrong.

The money we are spending on this SHOULD be going toward alternative engineering. Not more ways to line the profits of big oil companies. And not allowing Americans to sit on their lazy asses any longer. Lazy, meaning not changing from the combustion of fuels to a better means of energy conversion for personal transportation.

This is very disruptive. They had better change the god damned name from "refuge" to something more appropriate and honest.

7. assholes. all of them.
"If Congress approved drilling in the Arctic refuge this year, oil would not begin flowing until about 2015, according to the Energy Information Administration."

Fucking brilliant. Yeah... lets destroy the refuge so we can start getting oil in 10 years. This is disgusting. Democrats Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Daniel Akaka of Hawaii... SHAME. ON. YOU.

13. Panel attaches drilling in (ANRW) refuge to budget bill
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/20025...

WASHINGTON A key Senate committee yesterday advanced a measure that would achieve President Bush's long-sought goal of opening a portion of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling.

"This has been a long time coming," Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, said after the panel voted to include authorization of the energy exploration in a budget bill.

But the drilling initiative, which environmentalists strongly oppose, still could be thwarted by an issue unrelated to the decades-old dispute: a fight over federal spending cuts.

Drilling proponents have hoped the measure would finally become law because, by attaching it to the budget bill, it would be immune to the threat of Senate filibusters that have previously blocked energy exploration in the refuge. But that was before Hurricane Katrina struck, setting off a fight in Congress over spending cuts to pay for rebuilding the storm-damaged Gulf Coast. Now the fate of Arctic drilling is tied to a budget-cutting bill that has run into trouble and might not pass.
