Carter's son aims barbs at Bush
10/15/2005, 11:58 p.m. ET
The Associated Press

ELKO, Nev. (AP) ...

Carter said the administration was waging a misguided campaign against terror, and he criticized President Bush's call to spend $200 billion rebuilding the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast without a tax increase or major spending cuts.

"How can anybody do that and not pay for doing it?" he asked. "To me, that was just irresponsible.

"I think the most significant issue right now is this concept of responsibility in government. It's not a matter of being conservative or liberal. Government needs to do the job and we've gotten away from that aspect."...

Carter said both his father and Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada have expressed support.

4. He has never been in politics.
The only asset he brings to the table is his father's name. Plus he has the marijuana issue from his Navy days some 35 years ago.

Need to meet the man and get a feel of his intellect. Ensign has money, ALOT of money. His only real vulnerability is his connection to Bush.

Harry Reid found him. But Harry plays a VERY deep game, Carter could be a one shot throw away. That reminds me, need to talk to Harry and see if he thinks Carter is up to it.

Course Harry could feed me a line too...

What would a state so dependent on Las Vegas care about some youthful marijuana use?

7. This is the "talking head" crowd...
...doubt it would mean much to the average Las Vegan but it will hurt him in the rural counties. Of course that is red shrub country so it may not matter much.

Remember that the rural parts of the state are heavily Mormon and despise Las Vegas (which pays all the taxes, naturally) as sin city.

Of course that does not keep them from coming down to 'tie one on' and then go home to preach against sodom and gomorrah in the desert.

19. The Nevada media hate Carter's guts,
and they want to proclaim Ensign the winner by default.

They are VERY upset this upstart has decided to run for what was considered a safe Republican seat. But Ensign has nothing going for him, as he is a good-looking lightweight.

Ensign isn't as bad as Chic "nuclear suppository" Hecht, but he's incompetent enough.

He got into the political game in the first place because his daddy is a big shot with Circus Circus.

Carter has far more political connections than Ensign, and his behind-the-scenes political experience is impressive, so I would not at all count him out.

The military drug thing is old, old, old news. It shouldn't hurt Carter at all.

53. So who owns the media in NV?
If it's RED than if they don't like Carter, that's a real good sign.

If it's just because he's so new on the scene that they don't have any dirt on him that isn't 35 years old, that's good too.

If it's just because of who his daddy is and they are worried he'll win, so they're pissing on him to help the other guy, that's good too. It means he's probably a really good candidate if they are wasting this much time smearing him.

Remember what Hackett nearly did in a rethug strong hold?

I say keep shaking them up.

30. WRONG!! HARRY REID DID NOT FIND HIM!!!
I was at dinner with Carter the night before his Elko speaking engagement. This article is a week example of what he said, he spoke and answered questions for almost 1.5 hours!!!

Harry needs a challenger. If he doesn't support Carter, Carter will be back to run against him. Enough said.

Quit being so negative Gronk. I suspect you think you know it all without checking the fact.

33. You are pretty much FOR Carter as long as he's up to the task, right?
I mean you were talking initially about offering to help out.

I think people are misreading your politco speak as putting Carter down, but you are simply trying to estimate his chance at success w/o knowing more about him.

I wonder if Harry's research on the Energy Bill and the obvious back track to the 70's and what the Senior Carter did in response to a gas crises brought him face to face with the son?

If Carter Jr is like his dad, he probably is very capable and has the passion to get the job done, but would need a good speach writer because people like him and his dad are better at doing than talking about doing.

I'm happy that you're with a good candidate who has a dad that is probably one of the best presidents we've ever had. What an example.

You're talking about DEMs shooting their own. What are you doing to the person who you started attacking when you first joined the thread and what are you doing to me for standing up for that person's right to have their own opinion and asking you to give information, not personal slams.

If you can't post without slamming, then maybe your days voting for Bush Butt Boys have affected you more than you know.

Ripping people apart personally because they don't agree with us isn't they way it's done on DU.

If you want access to this huge community and it would be good for Carter and his campaign if you did, then just play by the same rules as the rest of us do. If you have any real DEM leanings, it can't be that hard to treat people with respect instead of contempt.

Don't jump the gun. It is going to take ALOT of time, work and money to beat Ensign. The strain on the Candidate and his staff is incredible. Volunteers can be hard to find, Vegas is all about money!

Do I want to defeat Ensign? Yes! Do I think it will be easy? HELL NO!!!

Carter's Son Aims Barbs at Bush

By Associated Press
October 15, 2005, 11:58 PM EDT

ELKO, Nev. -- Jack Carter, the son of the former president, took aim at the Bush administration Saturday during his first stop on a tour to gauge support for a possible run for U.S. Senate.

Carter, 58, said he would announce in a month whether he'll challenge Republican Sen. John Ensign, who is seeking a second term in 2006.

Nevada has nearly even voter registration among Republicans and Democrats. Carter started his tour in a Republican stronghold 290 miles east of Reno, speaking to about 35 people at a meeting of the Elko County Democratic Central Committee.

He avoided any sharp criticism of Ensign and instead attacked the Bush administration.

48. While I do not like Harry Reid lately, he is NOT a wimp --
New Yorker Article: MINORITY RETORT.How a pro-gun, anti-abortion Nevadan leads the Senates Democrats.

As George W. Bush has learned, Harry Reid does not ignore slights. I believe in vengeance, he once told a reporter.

<snip>

In July of 1978, a man named Jack Gordon, who was later married to LaToya Jackson, offered Reid twelve thousand dollars to approve two new, carnival-like gaming devices for casino use. Reid reported the attempted bribe to the F.B.I. and arranged a meeting with Gordon in his office. By agreement, F.B.I. agents burst in to arrest Gordon at the point where Reid asked, Is this the money? Although he was taking part in a sting, Reid was unable to control his temper; the videotape shows him getting up from his chair and saying, You son of a bitch, you tried to bribe me! and attempting to choke Gordon, before startled agents pulled him off. I was so angry with him for thinking he could bribe me, Reid said, explaining his theatrical outburst. Gordon was convicted in federal court in 1979 and sentenced to six months in prison.

One day in 1981, Landra Reid noticed that the family station wagon was not running properly, and she discovered a cable under the hood and something sticking out of the gas tank. Police found a device that would have exploded had it been correctly grounded. Reid always blamed Gordon for the bomb, and the incident frightened his familyby then there were five children, four sons and a daughterso that for a year they started the car by remote control. Gordon died in April, at the age of sixty-six, and his connection to the bombing attempt was never proved. McCue, Reids chief of staff, says that the episode changed Reid. Whatever the issue, she says, his approach is always No one is going to kill me over this.

If NVMojo could quit attacking people long enough, maybe she could provide insightful information. Says she spent about 2 days with the family, but other than asking for blindly loyal support, I didn't catch a lot of details about what Carter is about from her.

One other poster did say that Jack Carter has been active for years behind the scenes. Maybe that poster would elaborate?

56. A lot of "overnight success" musicians get the same thing.
He's an "overnight media darling" I guess, since you're aware he's been behind the scenes for years. That's good. I hope that means he's like his dad in the way that he can get things done. Most of the real work is done behind the scenes, so someone who has that kind of background is even more solid if they can deal with the whole media thing.

Jimmy Carter wasn't too comfortable with the press. He was happy to do the work, but his modesty made it hard for him to get up there and toot his own horn.

If Jack can handle the media and has access to his father's guidance and years of political background experience, that's really good news.

The more I look at the things that Carter and Clinton did in office compared to the crap we get when rethugs are in, the better I feel about supporting any DEM as long as they aren't being financed by the other side.

Carter's Energy Bill in the '70's was a real effective plan and Reagan stripped most of it out when he got in control. If we just dusted Carter Sr's plan off and revamped it with the available alternative energy options we now have, it would work again.

Realize that the MSM doesn't really put facts out there without skew, so we might have bits and pieces out of line, but come here to DU to get more information.

You attacked someone who initially just wanted to get more information, may have been incorrect about the Reid connection, wanted to contact Reid about what he knew and even was thinking of helping with speech writing. Obviously someone who was willing to like Carter and you pissed on him.

Before you go telling other DEMs to pull their heads out of their arses you better check the position of your own.

40. Mods have deleted threads for saying, "You are full of shit"
If I had just alerted the thread most of NVMojo's stuff would have been scrubbed.

I'm trying to be helpful here and I don't give a damm who you people know, when the first words out on the thread from NVMojo were,

"where the fuck are you from?? I live in Elko, repubs were exciting.."
(try to edit to make sense - maybe he meant excited? - so hot headed it is not even clear what is being said) and then he accused the previous poster of being "for" the rethug candidate.

Misunderstandings happen all the time on DU. We don't know each other and it's easy to take things the wrong way, but when you attack the person it is a personal attack. Period.

I'm sure NVMojo is a great person and probably just overly excited about this candidate, but if he's with Carter's campaign and continues acting like that toward potential supporters, then poor Carter.

41. Back at ya, Tigress, I still believe he's an outsider ...and there was no
indication he had any intentions of doing anything but bash, just as you are.

and how many posts does he have? Don't bother... this is piffle. Let's concentrate on all the REAL work you are doing.

edited to say...isn't it rich how some people send hateful pm's and then put one on ignore so you can't even respond? It's like a freeper thing?

54. How did you know NVMojo blocked my pm's?
I don't have anyone on my blocked list, so you can't mean me.

Shall I post all the pm's that I sent and we'll let others decide if I was being hateful?

You two are really beginning to creep me out.

50. Asking you not to make personal attacks is bashing how?
Is this like accusing a person of being a racist for calling "a racist comment" "a racist comment"?

If you are having a bad day or something, whatever, but don't take it out on other people and then try to turn it around and make yourself the victim. Throughout everything you posted is a real bad attitude.

I'm talking specifics about things that were said and how they were said and you just keep throwing out the personal slams. I think it's really immature of you to do that.

You want to learn from your mistakes, fine. You want to act like a cretin - and oh so cute, send me a pm and then block me from returning the pm. Is this third grade or something?

IF I were in Nevada, I'd check Carter out and I'd warn him about the kind of things you do on DU and see what kind of response that you would get in a professional arena for your childish prattle.

My advise. Grow up, lose the explicatives, and if you really are for this candidate read through things carefully before you make up your mind about them and especially before you go spouting your mouth. We have too few good DEMs for them to lose because people working in the trenches for them have poor people skills.

I don't see anything in your posts that genuinely cause me to believe you are a professional and I didn't see anything in the other person's posts that would indicate they were in the rethug's camp.

63. Thank you Tigress,
Apparently the flame war started on the 16th. Since I posted on the 15th I seemed to of missed it. Your defense on my behave was most appreciated.

NV Mojo is apparently based in Elko, to my North. Since I am in Las Vegas I did not go to the meeting at Elko. Since I have been out of politics for a while I am no longer well known in Nevada Democratic circles.

Mr. Carter CAN win in Nevada. It will NOT be easy. As previously posted, Mr. Ensign has family connections to Circus Circus and is thus known to the real money men in Nevada, the casino owners/operators. Unfortunately this means that Mr. Carter's natural base in Las Vegas is not a given.

There are Democrats in the rural counties. Not a majority but it gives Mr. Carter a base to build on. Hopefully the Republicans in the rural areas are as sick of shrub as the rest of the county.

There in is the key. Mr Ensign must be tied to the pResidents coattails. By himself, Ensign has no political liabilities. Though he is not a "heavyweight" intellectually, he is not stupid. Plus the power of the incumbency is at his disposal.

One thing I do know in Nevada politics, being strident is a no-no! Being partisan is fine...pointing out an opponents flaws is expected. But do not be a flaming liberal. Bob Beers (Republican) who is a strident conservative knows to keep his attacks focused on taxes (a sure winner) and leave his more controversial stuff for right wing party gatherings.

Mr. Carter seems to understand this. I hope his staff also understands this. If not it will be another Bob Bernstein.

Note: Bob Bernstein was the last challenger to Senator Ensign. A smart Las Vegas lawyer who was vastly Ensign's superior in intellect had the Democratic establishment in a twitter about his chances. Needless to say, the money won; not the intellect.
