Iraqi voters hunt for polling sites

Hours before a crucial referendum on a new constitution, voters in western Iraq, where many are expected to say "No", were asking themselves a troubling question: where are the polling stations?

"There are no voting centres in cities like Haditha, Hit, Rawa, Qaim, Ana, Baghdadi and the villages around them," Mahmoud Salman al-Ani, a human rights activist in Ramadi said, listing locations across western Anbar province.

"There aren't actually any voting centres or even voting sheets in these cities ... Nobody knows how and where to vote if they decide to," he said of the predominantly Sunni Arab region.

Anbar, Iraq's largest province, runs from Baghdad to border Jordan, Syria and Saudi Arabia and is also the heartland of the Sunni-led insurgency. Much of the population is expected to vote against the US-backed constitution on Saturday.

5. I heard today that...
The Iraqi constitution could only be shot down if 3/4's(may have been 2/3) of voters in at least 3 provinces voted it down.

Seems like they may have figured out a way for that not to happen. I am not sure if the above places are in areas considered to be hostile to the new constitution.

8. i see one of two outcomes
one, they aren't able to outright steal the 'election' and blame syria for the loss, promising 'consequences' or two, they steal it and ignore any claims to the contrary. the question is will el-sistani play along. or a number of other local players. they'll EASILY sell a 'win' to the american people, but can they do so in iraq?

9. We can only know what we're told.
And we'll be told that Iraq has taken a giant step forward to freedom.

10. Fools! They have made a mockery of democracy. From the selection
of BeelzeBush in 2000, to the late night arm twisting votes in the House and their removal of legitimately elected officials such as Haiti and Venezuela.

Do they think the Sunnis will be as complacent as Americans were in 2000 and 2004 and just roll over? The violence will escalate if this is true and the referendum passes. We ain't seen nuttin yet.

This mal-administration has become way too comfortable using their shenanigans because of their past success. This one may just finally bite them in the arse.

12. I am shocked, shocked and awed!
Who would have thought it could happen in Iraq who, after all, are a free and democratic society, according to Snotty Scottie. Hmmmm, didn't the same thing happen in some places in the US during the 2000 and 2002 elections? Merely a coincidence I am sure, lol.
