22,000 Katrina Evacuees Still Homeless
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -

The federal government has moved nearly a quarter-million Hurricane Katrina victims into hotel rooms, mobile homes or other housing - but more than 22,000 people remain in shelters, the head of the relief effort said.

The news dampened hopes that the government could meet its self-imposed deadline to empty shelters of hurricane victims. President Bush set a mid-October goal for getting everyone out, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency was shooting for Oct. 15.

Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad Allen said nobody would be forced out of shelters Saturday. In the meantime, FEMA, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Small Business Administration will help the remaining evacuees find housing.

2. Moving from the shelters to a hotel room
means they found a home? It isn't 22,000 still homeless, but more than 250,000! This putting them up in hotels is costing FEMA $11 million per day. All so they can claim that the shelters are nearly empty now. Disgusting waste of money.

5. I was about to say
I know that when homeless families are on a waitlist for a shelter spot -- here in the DC area, that waitlist is years long -- and are housed "temporarily" in motels, they're still counted as being homeless.

4. Who cares? We've moved on. That's historical data.
Honestly, doesn't the administration have enough on its hands with all the indictments?

You liberals just won't give Bush a chance. :sarcasm:
