Lower Turnout Expected in Calif. Election
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -

Despite raising tens of millions of dollars in campaign donations, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his opponents will likely be preaching to selective audiences as they try to mobilize voters for the November special election.

The 2003 recall that swept Schwarzenegger into office drew a turnout of greater than 60 percent, but the percentage of voters heading to the polls on Nov. 8 is expected to be far lower, perhaps by more than 20 percentage points.

The campaigns are now focusing on their core supporters, hoping targeted pitches will send enough of them to the polls to sway the election in their favor.

1. Special election for a special nutcase.

I haven't seen a single commercial advocationg this POS's stupid ballot measures.

Meanwhile, anti-schwarzenscum commercials air on a daily basis.

The sorry sack-o-shit will just have to preach to these so-called "town hall" functions which are composed of hand-picked audiences.

Good luck, loser.

2. where do you live ?
it is likely that they are spending the money for their ads in mostly Republican areas if the goal is to get out your own side.

i mostly saw anti Arnold ads but have seen more pro Arnold ones, usually with himself as spokesperson.

5. Hate to say this...
But I'm in San Diego, and I haven't seen nor heard a pro-Arnold ad.

I will be voting in this election, early and often.

6. based on further reading
it seems the Arnold side is focusing on direct mail and phone calls to voters they feel will vote their way.

i hope it has the opposite results with people just ending up being annoyed at the mail, calls etc .

9. I live in the Valley, where many moderate Dems & GOPers live
I've seen a number of pro-Aaaanold commercials, along with the anti-Aanold ones. The one line in a pro-Aanold ad that really hacks me off is the actor who turns to the camera and says Sacramento is so screwed up, anything would be an improvement.

11. I am in L.A.,
and I have seen plenty. Usually an anti Arnold ad followed by a pro Arnold, I would not normally, but I have been watching more network TV this season than usual.

19. OC here - have only seen the
ad pushing 78 and occasionally a pro 75. Been registering voters - steroid boy is NOT a popular person even here in red country.

12. I'm in LA
And we've just started getting a lot of print advertising for these propositions. Of course, my husband is a long-standing republican, so we tend to get a lot of those mailings. I don't know if that is representative of the rest of the area.

On the other hand, print mailings are cheap - maybe all our neighbors are also getting blanketed by these things. In any event, it does appear that there's a real campaign starting up.

I haven't seen many pro arnold at all. Very surprising to me. When I voted earlier this month the poll workers told me they had 2% turnout. 2%!

10. Phone banks and precinct walking are in high gear
Dems need to get their voters to the polls. I've noticed that the anti-Arnold ads are showing Arnie. Associating him with the propositions hurts their chances. I think the parental notification on abortion may pass.

13. Low turnout tends to favor Republicans...
...is the conventional wisdom. Self-identified Democrats and independents don't make it to the poll in proportionate numbers.

14. This election will buck conventional wisdom
There's two measures that will bring out the Democrats in force: the teacher tenure measure and the union dues measure. Teachers and unions are two of the biggest forces in California politics.

I expect more Repugs to stay home than Democrats.

I live in highly conservative Bakersfield and there is no enthusiasm for the election from any of the Republicans I associate with. There is, however, a high level of interest from the Democrats here I know.
