'Terrorist Act' on Tech Campus
http://www.11alive.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=70306

Three explosive devices found in a courtyard between two Georgia Tech dormitories on the East Campus Monday morning were part of a "terrorist act," an Atlanta police official said.

One of the devices exploded, injuring the custodian who found them inside a plastic bag. Two others were detonated by a bomb squad.

The custodian suffered ringing to the ears and was treated at a local hospital. The events led to a temporary evacuation Monday morning.

"It is a terrorist act at this point and depending on the outcome of the investigation it potentially could become a federal violation as well," said Major C.W. Moss of the Atlanta Police Department.

13. OU campus newspaper: "The FBI needs to start talking"

One week and two days after the FBI began investigating the Joel Hinrichs case, the feds seemingly have stopped releasing information about what they have learned.

It’s time the FBI opened its files and provided The Daily, other media and the greater public with some of the answers it undoubtedly has, for more than one reason.

Remember, the FBI has commandeered this investigation. In doing so and by not telling anyone anything, they are only allowing the events of Oct. 2 to be misinterpreted over and over by people who are firm in believing something that is false and terribly dangerous.

Which is why it is undeniably the duty of the FBI to break its unctuous vow of silence and talk to somebody. The longer the feds delay in doing so, the more they become equally responsible for misinformed social reactions as the hacks who started these rumors in the first place.

In Dallas, the following week:

Cotton Bowl safe, secure:
Standard security procedures were followed at the OU-Texas game

A worker at the information desk, who also could not release her name, said the presence of the Secret Service at the game was not part of any heightened security measures.

“Secret Service was at the game to watch over the Bush twins, not for any threat to the stadium,” she said.

14. Were the SS equipped with Capsicain and Tasers?
They'd need them for that job.

2. Wow, I almost went to grad school there.
I guess it can happen anywhere, but you have to ask yourself about the convenience of the timing. The shrubs poll numbers are in the toilet and there's nothing more we love than a good old fashioned attack to unify the country, especially when he's trying to get on of his close personal friends to SCOTUS. Maybe my conspiracy radar is a little too active.

7. WHo can say with so few details.
Man I'm glad I am not an undergrad today. In the physics lab we all had access to the liquid nitrogen tank. And it was very common to blow off steam playing with the stuff. Nitrogen bombs are mostly harmless. And I made more than my fair share back in the day. Take a coke bottle put put some LN2 in and recap it wait about 2-3 minutes and bang. We'd set them off all over the place as pranks. If we did that today we'd likely end up being shipped to foreign soil for an 'interrogation'.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if that is what this was. Let's see the janitors only injury is ringing ears. That 'chemical' could have been anything including plain old nitrogen; or even baking soda and lemon juice. And it was placed inside a plastic bottle. Sounds like a prank not terrorism. But hard to say with so few details.

11. I Agree
In my youth I played with all kinds of non-lethal things. Like placing some dry ice inside a coke bottle along with some hot water. Made a bang as loud as an M-80 if the bottle was thick enough. Baking powder and vinegar is another concoction which can produce the same result.

Also salt peter and sugar was another nice combination for making smoke bombs with 8 inch flames.

I guess all of these things could be considered 'terrorism' these days. I guess the smoke or the explosion could 'scare' someone. But 'terrorism', I really don't think so.

4. ANYTHING unlawful is being called "terrorist" these days... that
is NOT good. Because they'll use "terrorist laws" when "terrorist acts" are committed... And that means you can kiss your legal system good-bye.

6. He suffered ringing to the ears? The horror!!!
Ok, Perhaps this is serious, but it doesn't really sound like it.

Next in the news...high schooler lights of M-80 in toilet, charged with terrorist act and 300 counts of attempted murder...shipped to Saudi Arabia for questioning.

10. Man I'm glad I'm not in college anymore.
Back in my day we only had rapists, psychopaths, drunken biochemists and engineers, megalomaniac sociologists, the Tri-Kaps, frothing militants of every national and political stripe, suicidal goths and the ROTC.

I don't think I could deal with terrorists.

Stephen Bainbridge notes that an explosive device was discovered on the UCLA campus last Friday. He adds:

Let's hope it's just an odd coincidence, but, when coupled with the recent University of Oklahoma bombing, one also hopes that there will be a complete investigation.
Ditto that.

http://tapscottscopydesk.blogspot.com/2005/10/13-plastic-bottles-found-in-hinrichs.html

Among the items listed on the inventory are "13 plastic bottles" in the trunk. The inventory did not note if there was anything in the bottles, their size or coloration. The blue Lincoln was registered in Oklahoma under Hinrichs' name in June of this year, according to state tag records. The expiration date on the tag was February 2006.
Tapscott's Copy Desk has also learned that a tree near where Hinrichs' bomb detonated displays a number of small round holes and some areas of a metallic substance. The holes and substance are only on the side facing the bench on which Hinrichs was seated when the bomb detonated. The holes appear to be about the size of the head of 16 penny nail.
