Plane Carrying Viruses Crashes in Canada
Plane Carrying Viruses Crashes in Canada
Oct 06 6:57 PM US/Eastern
WINNIPEG, Manitoba

A cargo plane carrying small amounts of flu virus crashed on railway tracks near Winnipeg's city center Thursday, killing the pilot but missing buildings and vehicles, authorities said.

The research samples of frozen influenza and herpes viruses were destroyed in the crash and ensuing fire along with other freight, Federal Express spokeswoman Karen Cooper said.

She said the Cessna 208 was owned by Morningstar Air Express of Edmonton and was under contract to FedEx.

Morningstar spokesman Don Boettcher didn't immediately identify the woman piloting the aircraft. "She'd been with us for about five years," he said, without providing further details.

The plane took off from the Winnipeg airport en route to Thunder Bay, Ontario, at about 5:45 a.m. and traveled about four miles southeast of the airport before it requested a return, Transportation Safety Board investigator David Ross said.

11. Well, a plane crash and fire will pretty much do it....................
most viruses aren't very hardy outside the body, let alone when subjected to burning aviation fuel.

23. Plane crash would also hide any evidence if some of the cargo was not
really there. Good way to get some unaccountable samples: have a crash.

Just working with my tin foil ball here...

38. So glad to hear it. Have seen WAY too much thought police action here
of late to respond to anything which smacks of it with less than emphatic words. Nothing hostile in my intent either. Just gonna elbow back anytime any response feels like a leash being pulled instead of a real discussion.

9. aren't they worried that they are overplaying this?
Bush gives his speech on how he'll use an outbreak as an excuse for martial law, now this crap about a plane crashing with a virus...it just all seems so painfully obvious.

I just hope when they give us the bird flu they don't use that as their excuse to nuke Iran.

13. I don't think they are deliberately overplaying it. It's just that with
all the concern about bioterrorism, the media like everybody else has become germ-obsessed. Things like this would never have made the news 10 years ago, though they surely happened then, too.

30. I don't think the issue is the media--it's Bushies
at some point, you have to ask yourself why terrorism became such a big problem at exactly the time we have a White House full of defense contractors and oil men.

If my care breaks down right after I go to the mechanic, I tend to think he did something to generate business.

It is no different with larger businesses.

Truck carrying anthrax involved in crash
Last Updated Wed, 02 Mar 2005 19:51:20 EST

WINNIPEG - A Federal Express courier truck carrying a package of anthrax collided with a car in central Winnipeg Wednesday, but officials say the package was not damaged in the crash and the public was never in danger.

The truck was carrying five packages for the Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health, the federal virology lab, which contained samples of anthrax, E. coli, salmonella, tuberculosis, influenza and a sexually transmitted disease.

14. WTF? Why Winnipeg of all places?
:tinfoilhat: Could it be because it is an easily contained large urban centre, with a very diverse population? I used to live in the 'peg, so I know the terrain. It would be an excellent place to try out various "human guinea pig" experiments.

19. The Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health,
the federal virology lab, is in Winnipeg. Here's more about it: http://www.nml.ca/english/facilities_capabilities.htm

Nah, they're not trying to kill any Peggers off.

IF they start thinking about experiments like that, I would like to write the gov and ask them to start at the Alberta legislature. :D

26. I live here now. I'd better not be some guinea pig...
It's hard enough warding off the regular flu bugs these days. Actually, I passed the proximity of the crash site on my way to work this a.m. Obviously, many medic and fire trucks, as well as bio people there. Winnipeg is home to a new state of the Art Bioterrorism lab.
I suspect that's why people get nervous when any cargo plane or truck crashes around here.

And it ate right through its glass vial and attcked the pilot while she was flying the plane...

20. I do work with a company that regularly ships far more dangerous cargo. .
than a few research samples of influenza and herpes virus. And their shipments are all sent out via common carrier -- Airborne, Federal Express, etc. Nothing unusual, or "tinfoil" about a few samples burning up in a small aircraft disaster.
