Dems Pursue Ohio Election System Overhaul
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Democrats pushing an overhaul of the election system in Ohio — the state that swung the White House race to
President Bush last year — are hoping timing truly is everything.

To the Democrats' delight, the four overhaul measures will appear on the Nov. 8 ballot at a time when the long-ruling Republican Party is engulfed in both an ethics scandal and a furor over an ill-fated state investment in rare coins.

"I think the biggest argument for these amendments happens to be the fact that the Republicans are out there saying, `Well, we don't have a problem,'" said Paul Tipps, a former chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party.

Across the nation on Election Day, 39 issues will be decided in nine states, including a redistricting proposal in California backed by Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

1. Ken Blackwell
Is most definitely a problem. I'm glad the Dems seem to finally be taking all the illegal crap that went on in Ohio in 2004 seriously.

3. Way to go Dems. Of course the Repukes like the system. It creates
mistrust and apathy in Dems.

They don't fix wedges that pay-off.

5. Nothing about voting machines in there?
Read the article and it seemed to only talk about redistricting change, nothing about voting machines themselves. I hope somebody tells those Ohio dems that Diebold is crooked...

8. Here's the summary...
* Issue 2: Makes it easier to vote by allowing all Ohioans to vote by mail
* Issue 3: Helps stop the influence of big money in elections by greatly reducing campaign contributions.
* Issue 4: Stops the politicians from drawing their own legislative districts and puts an Independent Commission in charge of this process.
* Issue 5: Places a bi-partisan Board of Supervisors in charge of Ohio's elections, instead of a partisan official who backs candidates and takes sides in elections.

12. You mean the Ohio Dems, like the Chair of the Franklin County Dem Party
Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 04:06 PM by mod mom
who said (at a House Administration Committee meeting in March held in Columbus, OH) that the Ohio election was fair and anyone who said otherwise was a "conspiracy theorist" ? Remember, Columbus was the site of the 5+ hour waits in inner city low income African American neighborhoods, while the suburban precincts (read repuke) did not have horrendous waits. You call that fair? We need to clean house in the ODP!

That said, this RON group was not spear-headed by the OH Dem Party and 3 of the 4 initiatives are very important. Issue 2, EARLY VOTING, sounds good because one thinks it can address the long lines, but it leaves open a giant window of opportunity for fraud in that the time involved cannot be closely monitored. Issues 3,4, & 5 are tres important!

22. Is that wishful thinking, or do you have an explanation?
I mean, they put an anti-gay measure on the ballot which was 'voted for' in 2004 on the same machines that cast Kerry votes for Bush.

Somehow I have to be skeptical unless you know something I don't.

9. Reform Ohio Now (RON) has put together 4 voter initiatives to help
level the playing field in Ohio politics:

Issue 2 - Makes it easier to vote by allowing all Ohioans to vote by mail.
Issue 3 - Helps stop the influence of big money in elections by greatly reducing campaign contributions.
Issue 4 - Stops the politicians from drawing their own legislative districts and puts an Independent Commission in charge of this process.
Issue 5 - Places a bi-partisan Board of Supervisors in charge of Ohio's elections instead of a partisan politician.

Ohio is so over run with partisan corrupt hacks, these are the only way to institute changes to rectify the system. They are currently running aa fund raising drive and if any of you DU-ers can, please donate at:

27. You can help out in Ohio (also California)
This November, there's no Presidential election. But voters will be making critical decisions that affect all of us, and you can influence the outcome.

In less than five weeks, voters in two pivotal states -- Ohio and California -- will help determine the direction for the rest of the country. In Ohio, proponents of clean elections have placed four excellent measures on the ballot that will prevent corruption and voter abuse. If enacted, election reform could sweep the country.

In California, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his special interest allies have spent millions to put measures before the voters that are designed to gut health and education spending, dramatically weaken unions, and require a redistricting before the next census. If Arnold succeeds in these initiatives, you can be sure they will appear in other states as well.

Hundreds of millions of special interest dollars are being spent to defeat reform in Ohio and pass regressive measures in California.
But, we can all win by talking to voters one-on-one to increase understanding and voter turnout. Want to get plugged into the "ground game?"

Red State, Blue State, East Coast, Great Plains, or Desert Southwest -- the results of the California and Ohio elections will affect you, no matter where you live. Please, volunteer your time, give money or both. And, tell your friends to do the same. Together we can make a difference.
