| Arkansas Clinic Offers Free Abortions (for Hurricane Evacuees) |
|
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050928/ap_on_re_us/katrina... Arkansas Clinic Offers Free Abortions ------------------ Wed Sep 28, 6:35 AM ET ------------------ A doctor has offered to perform free abortions on hurricane evacuees, saying it may be too dangerous for them to wait until they return home.
(snip)
"If we didn't provide it now, they would get it later — a late-term abortion that would give greater risk to the mother's health," Edwards told KTHV-TV in Little Rock.
(snip)
Rose Mimms, executive director of Arkansas Right to Life, said Edwards is risking further traumatizing women who have already lost their material belongings. "This just adds to the devastation these women already have in their lives," she said.
But Marvin Schwartz, spokesman for Arkansas-Oklahoma Planned Parenthood, said Edwards is providing women with a needed service.
"The timing of the abortion procedure is, of course, extremely critical. The earlier in the pregnancy, the less critical it is," he said

|
Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 02:56 PM by CottonBear
The congress is holding up a 9 billion $ health care plan for evacuees who have lost their jobs and insurance and who don't even live in the same state where they may have had a state-sponsored health care plans. How many women were scheduled for appointments before the hurricane or who have found themselves pregnant after the hurricane? Women need to make the choice free from the control of men, politicians and fundamentalists and without any worries about how to pay the doctor.
I agree that no jokes should be made about abortion. However, as a woman who has had an abortion, I would never take away the right for a woman to make her own health care and reproductive choices.
The doctor is doing the right thing.

You are so afraid of the word "abortion" that you can't see what a service this man is offering. Or do you have at *least* $400 in your back pocket to give to these women burdened with an unwanted pregnancy on top of everything else they have to deal with?

he's providing abortions free to women who need one before they can return home. If they have to wait until they can return home, the procedure could be more difficult. It's not like he's running around and gathering up pregnant women and forcing them to abort. Sheesh

as for advertising, these women already are going crazy standing in lines wondering where to find services of every kind. Life has gone from living, to one long wait after another.
There's also the issue of the health of a pregnancy that, especially during the developing stages, was exposed to wading through contaminated waters, dehydration and malnutrition. Another thing to prey on the women's minds as they try to get their lives back in order and in many cases the lives of children they already have.
He isn't going on the streets rounding them up. It's offering them options and options is what Democrats try to have available. Merely options.

but this is a little ridiculous. Can't the evacuees make the sacrifice to NOT have unprotected sex throughout the time that they are homeless or without material sources to provide for the children they may have as a result of unprotected sex?
With rights come responsibilities. Women should have the right to decide what happens with their bodies, but that doesn't mean they should lose all self-control and start having babies that will aggravate their health and their economic situation in the middle of a humanitarian crisis like Katrina.
I say this as a Latino man myself, and with the full knowledge that the majority of Katrina's victims are people of color, like myself. My sistas, Latina and black, this is not the time to be adding a new member to the family. Keep the legs crossed, and if it's impossible for you to not have sex in the middle of a humanitarian crisis, then please use condoms.
As for this doctor's services, please, could you focus on treating the wounded and sick, and not on promoting irresponsible birth-control practices in the middle of a humanitarian crisis. If I was in such a crisis, the last thing that would be on my mind was having sex and kids. Let's the draw line somewhere, fellow DUers. We demand much of the goverment because it should be responsible for the welfare of our fellow citizens, but we don't demand much citizen responsibility in keeping what they do in this humanitarian disaster within reasonable boundaries.
Beyond that perspective, I also think it's horrible for the image of poor, minority people. People will say, "look at those black ladies. Having more babies on the dole". It just smacks of all the wrong things to do at the wrong time.
Just my 2 cents and nobody needs to be offended.

I doubt these women choose to get pregnant. But it happens unfortunately. And abortion is legal in this country.

Me, I don't know if I'd choose to bear a child after exposure to toxic floodwaters and mold and who knows what else especially knowing I wouldn't have the resources to raise the child anymore.
Not to mention the possiblity that women will need abortions after being raped. It's not like they could've gone to the pharmacy to get emergency contraception and the hospitals that were letting the sickest die and trying to save the rest almost certainly didn't have a SART nurse on hand to care for any rape victims who could get to thier facilities.
Show a little compassion, would you?

What if they were raped in the shelter? Most likely though it happened before the hurricane. So is it right to bring a child into the world when you have no idea where you are going to be living or what kind of job you might have. Stop blaming the women.

It sounds like you are placing all the "blame" for sexual behavior on the women who should have "kept their legs crossed" with no focus on the man keeping his fly zipped.
Anyway, sex is a natural response to tragedy or trauma. Sometimes, people want to, or need to, reaffirm life in ways that may seem strange to some one on the outside.
Unfortunately, this sometimes leads otherwise decent people to commit unspeakable acts. I'm not talking about that, although we know that happens.
Loving couples may feel the need to reach out to each other in a physical way. When their lives are turned upside down, it may be the only thing that helps them feel normal. Sometimes, people without a loved one may, feeling lonely and scared, seek intimacy with a stranger. I can't say it is smart, but as long as the stranger is consenting, I am not going to sit in my comfy air conditioned house with my fully belly and judge the way these people coped with the disaster.
As for condoms, these people had enough to worry about.

sure are good at spewing ANTI-WOMAN, ANTI-CHOICE c--p. You need to seriously reacquaint yourself with the concept of pro-choice and abortion rights. And why the hell are you recommending condoms? Condoms are ineffective birth control. Haven't you heard of the pill? SUCH IGNORANCE.........
How do you know the women from NOLA maybe didn't have to take antibiotics for treatment of wound infections from the debris, and it caused their birth control pills to become ineffective, and now they are pregnant. At a time of turmoil, ACCIDENTS HAPPEN.
Why are you referring to abortion as an "irresponsible birth control practice"??????? I think to admit that you can't care for a child under these difficult circumstances and go ahead with an abortion is the height of RESPONSIBLE behavior.
This is just ignorant, sexist, misogynistic c--p.

you tell women to keep their legs crossed. What advice do you have for the men, or do you think the women reproduce themselves? Having sex might be the last thing you have on your mind in a crisis, but for a woman to become pregnant, it was obviously not the last thing on some man's mind. Why does all the responsibility fall on the women? If we are to bear all of the responsibility, then we should be able to make ALL decisions, unfettered by men's whims.

How fucking macho of you to decide when it is and isn't appropriate to have sex. I personally enjoy sex during times of crises, it is a wonderful de-stressor and I don't expect these people who have been displaced to remain virginal and in mourning. They are people. They have needs. Get over it.

They may not have even realized it. Now they must reconstruct their lives; many already have kids to care for. Save your lecture for the "fathers." How many of them are rushing forward with support?
You claim kinship with these women but point out that you are Latino & they are black. Those who feel they must accept this doctor's help are NOT having more babies on the dole.

But not of the specialized type the Arkansas doctor is offering. An unwanted pregnancy would be an additional burden for someone who has lost her home (& maybe her job). Even if the ladies are not penniless, their funds are not all that available.

The big staging area for evacuees was Reliant Park (Astrodome, etc.) It's right next to the Texas Medical Center, which is full of doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, etc. Quite a few volunteered to help. A clinic was set up to take care of major & minor problems.
Some patients were med-evaced (sp?) from NOLA (& elsewhere) directly to hospitals who admitted them without prior financial clearance. (Those who can pay will--eventually--but this was a very big dispensation by the bean counters.)

He works at a family planning clinic. These clinics provide healthcare, contraception and abortion services for women. It is the only one in central Arkansas. I doubt his clinic needs any advertising.
He is trying to help these women who not only are jobless and homeless but find themselves with an unwanted pregnancy on top of it.
I applaud him. If you disagree fine.
But if you keep using language like "murdering fetuses" here expect to be flamed.

Abortion is a serious matter, and a decision not lightly taken by the great majority of women who decide to have one. Of course, if our young people routinely received effective education about birth control, and access to methods of birth control, many unplanned pregnancies could be avoided.

You can have an opinion but you have no right to deny a woman you don't even know reproductive choice so keep your opinions to yourself. If you want to work reduce the number of abortions (which have increased during the Bu$h junta) support massive sex education, free contraception, always use condoms and buy your partner birth control pills or a diaphragm, get a vasectomy or become celibate.

Once he is finished ejaculating. Ejaculating into a vagina, or leaking sperm near a vagina, can result in pregnancy. If you are worried about abortion- Never have sex with a woman you don't want to have your baby. Because once you pull out, your choice is over.

No one is pro-abortion. Democrats work to reduce the number of abortions by providing excellent sex education, increasing access to health care providers and family planning clinics, providing low-cost or free contraception and making sure both men and women have good educations and well-paying jobs.

there is something we can agree on. We would both like to see fewer unwanted pregnancies in this country.
How can we do that? I think we need better sex education for boys as well as for girls as well as better access to contraception and healthcare.
Do you agree with any of that?
edit: oops- I had to edit the first sentence.

So basically, you want things to be like they were before, back alley abortions with thousands of women maimed or dead because of it? You are a sick fuck.

You had to be well off to be able to travel to other states to get an abortion. States like California and New York had liberalized laws, but other states outlawed it entirely or allowed it only to save the woman's life, rape, incest, or deformity of the fetus.
Texas was one with restrictive laws, and Roe v. Wade struck it down and all restrictive laws in other states were overturned as a result.

Judging from your attitude both times you had intercourse you were willing to assume the responsibility of fatherhood. Some people, get this, men and women, often have sex for pleasure and not to become parents. It gets more bizarre, married people have sex for reasons other than procreation! I know that is unbelievable to you, but married people even sometimes experience unplanned pregnancies.
I hope you're sitting because this news might topple your world, but husbands often support wives who chose abortion. That's right, a married woman who has only had one partner in her life can still need an abortion, it's not just your "whores" who drop their panties for every helpless man who can't stop himself who have abortions, it's the lady next door. In fact the promiscuous girls know how not to get caught.

| 113. The ONLY woman I have ever known to have had an abortion |
|
was my aunt. It was in 1945 (was illegal then) and she was a MARRIED woman of 45 and a grandmother to a 2 year old girl. She was starting menopause. Yes, it was her HUSBAND'S child. Neither of them wanted to be parents again. She was a middle class woman who had enough MONEY and connections to pay her OB/GYN to say she needed a therapeutic abortion because of her "serious heart condition".
Women with the financial means ALWAYS had a way to get an abortion. It was the POOR who were forced to have kids they didn't want and couldn't afford. Making abortion illegal now will change none of these facts.

Here in the real world where the rest of us live sex is a natural physical desire and need that occurs way before we are "adult" enough to be a parent.
Do you honestly think teens will stop having sex?

|
then they lost thier house and job and a family member or two and decided maybe this isn't the best circumstance to have a child? Or they're worried that the child could be negatively effected by the mold and toxins the mother was exposed to?
People don't make the decision to abort lightly, sometimes it's just the least awful option available.
PS You're assuming that life begins and is ethicly significant at conception. Not only is this a difficult decision to defend with science, it's also contrary to historical and religious tradition which placed the moment where a fetus gained personhood and abortion became a sin and potential crime at quickening, the first detectable movememts which occur sometime in the late first or early second trimiester.

Whether or not abortion remains legal in this country is the issue. One can be personally opposed to it yet not support outlawing it.

of free medical care has been provided throughout the southeast -- donated by practitioners, including the cost of supplies and drugs.
I know in my area, doctors are seeing evacuees regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. Most practices are still owned by individual doctors or small groups -- so seeing the patient for free is still free.

|
There's probably not as much to this as it appears - this guy wants to give his professional skills to people who might need them, and his professional skill is doing abortions. I'd imagine too that losing everything might make a person rethink the decision to bring a baby into the world. For some, the baby will be the one thing they still have. For others, the baby will be a little person they will not be able to care for in a country that has already abandoned them. That also might be what this doctor is thinking, doing what he can so that such an important lifelong decision isn't made on the basis of whether money is available this month.

I'm Pro-Choice, but I don't like how our fellow-American hurricane victims have been transported, without their prior knowledge of where they were going (till in flight) in UT/TX/OH and DC - why so far from their homes?
The way I see it, ***&Co see OIL in those Gulf waters, not people rebuilding their lives since the HALLIBURTON/ROVE/CHENEY machine moved right on in.
What we need is an EMERGENCY ADM*&CO Abortion!
