Castro: U.S. hasn't responded to Katrina offer
HAVANA, Cuba (AP) -- Cuba announced Tuesday it would create an organization of doctors ready for dispatch to natural disasters around the globe as it continued to wait for a response to its offer to send physicians to the United States to aid the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

The communist country has for decades spent many of its resources on training doctors, exporting them to help communities in allied African and Latin American nations.

The offer to send nearly 1,600 doctors to the United States was a fresh one, however, and communicated several times by Cuban President Fidel Castro himself.

But the U.S. government declined to accept readily, hinting that there were enough doctors already helping yet stopping short of saying no.

2. Aren't hospital corporations in New Orleans crying that they need
Edited on Tue Sep-13-05 03:12 PM by SimpleTrend
patients and more MONEY?

Why would any humanitarian assistance be refused in such an emergency?

Edited to add:

But the chief executives of two of the five hospitals told Reuters on Monday that what they most need is financial assistance after an extended period with no revenue -- and if they do not get it within the next two to four weeks they will not be able to keep the doctors they need.

3. WH snubbed Cuba's offer
"HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuban doctors put on stand-by a week ago by President Fidel Castro to fly to the aid of the victims of Hurricane Katrina said on Friday they hoped the United States would put politics aside and accept their help.

So far, the word from Washington has been thanks, but no thanks. The White House snubbed Cuba's offer and said Castro would do better "freeing" his Communist-run country."

4. The Bush administration is showing its true colors every day.
From the article you've posted:
"We are sad about the position the American government has taken. All of us have been waiting here for eight days," said Dr. Juan Carlos Dupuy, a general practitioner and chemical lab specialist.

"This is a humanitarian problem. We have to put aside politics. We are ready to go," he said.

Castro, calling a truce in Cuba's four-decade-old ideological war with the United States, offered on September 2 to fly the doctors to treat people in the New Orleans disaster
(snip/...)
It shows just how much concern Bush has for the well-being of Katrina's victems. The impact these Cuban doctors could make would be so helpful. They've even been practising their English:
Meanwhile, the 1,500 doctors are taking English language classes and brushing up on their epidemiological skills.
(snip)
This world can't use any more people like George W. Bush. He costs us everything, and gives back NOTHING.

5. Not just Bush, Judi.. its the entire system in the US
Take a look at the link in post #2 by SimpleTrend in this thread.. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050912/ts_nm/hospitals_dc

The entire for-profit hospital system in NO is about to go under. This will leave the city with almost no hospital infrastructure. No hospitals = no nurses, no triage, no techs, etc. No businesses would set up shop in a city with no healthcare system.

A perfect example of the ills of the US system.. for-profit just ain't gonna do it.

We have SO much to learn in the USA.

6. Thanks for refering to N.O.'s extreme health crisis.
I must've been in too large a hurry and missed catching it soon enough.

In light of the info. in that article, it makes Bush's rejection of the over 1500 doctors even colder, and less concerned with the N.O. people who desperately need that help they could bring in order to SAVE LIVES.

This is a case in which his idiot pride seems to be more important to him than the actual lives of American people.

8. Cuba DID meet Americans in World Cup Baseball game!
Cuba Tops USA In World Cup Medal Round
By John Manuel
September 14, 2005

Cuba brushed aside Team USA in the 36th World Cup in the Netherlands, jumping on the Americans early and often to win 11-3 and end Team USA’s chances of winning the gold medal.

The U.S. has not beaten Cuba in World Cup play since 1970. Team USA plays Nicaragua, a 2-1 loser to Panama, in the consolation round Thursday, while Cuba continues defending the World Cup title it has claimed eight consecutive times, dating back to 1982.
(snip)

Topping it all off, the two teams had what the official press release for the game termed an “altercation” at the plate early in the game that caused both dugouts to empty. The game also featured an ejection in the bottom of the seventh, when reliever James Garcia (Giants) was tossed for arguing with home-plate umpire Willie Rodriguez. Both teams had been issued warnings after the early dust-up. The teams traded hit batsmen, as Cuba beaned Ben Zobrist (Astros) in the fifth, and Cuba’s Juan Moreno took a dose in the sixth from Jason Phillips (Devil Rays).
