Reports from people in Ceiba, PUerto Rico, indicate that at least 1,000 survivors of Katrina are being brought to the (supposedly closed but still run and restricted by) Roosevelt Roads Navy Base. This has precedence, when Haitian survivors of a hurricane ended up in Ft. Allen, Puerto Rico. The people are kept from the press, and from the civilians outside. And if the survivors don't speak Spanish they will have a hard time communicating even if they can get out.

Keeping family groups together is very important. Once they're found, they should be united, ASAP. Setting up location of family members should be automated.

Everyone in FEMA should be carrying a portable notepad computer to write down where each member is in transit and when and where they arrive in relocations centers. All info would automatically go into the database.

They sure could learn something from UPS or FEDEX, huh?

out of state with no say as to their destination? Many probably have relatives elsewhere in Louisiana. Others no doubt have friends or relatives throughout the US. Shouldn't the first order of business be to determine which evacuees know someone willing to take them in, and provide them with the means to get to that unique support system?
Temporary shelter must be provided for those without a place to stay, but the location should be determined - to the extent possible - by the individual evacuee. For God's sake, these people have lost everything. And the government seems determined to rob them of their dignity, too.

And where are the checks? When my grandmother's home was flooded in Pennsylvania back in 1972, the feds handed her $5000.00 - a grant, not a loan - on the spot. Many were provided with trailers and families stayed together. It seems to me if we have billions to kill Iraqis, we ought to have the wherewithal to handle this situation without resorting to the forced removal of destitute people to concentration camps.

The government response to this catastrophe makes me ashamed to be an American.

The evacuation was being run by order of a judge in TX. It was handed over to FEMA yesterday and they just stopped doing anything and using the people not wanting to go as an excuse to do nothing, yet again.

Neighborhoods should be relocated to the same facility or at least the same city, so that community support groups can be somewhat maintained. People who know each other can determine the last known whereabouts of neighbors and loved ones. Temporary instituions like schools and churches can still function, albiet marginally.
