U.S. Salvation Army says food, supplies running out

WASHINGTON, Sept 2 (Reuters) - The Salvation Army is running out of food and supplies to help survivors of Hurricane Katrina, and fears "donor fatigue" could put relief efforts at risk, a spokesman for the U.S. aid agency said on Friday.

"We are running out of food, running out of supplies, and are finding it extremely difficult to find food and supplies," Salvation Army spokesman Major George Hood told Reuters from Jackson, Mississippi.

"I don't know how many more days of supplies we have, but it's running out quickly, and the infrastructure is so strangled right now that it's going to be difficult to get fresh supplies in here," he said.

Hood said the Salvation Army was running the largest relief operation in its history to deal with "the most devastating natural disaster that we've seen, probably the worst in the history of this country."

1. And how much is Halliburton donating?
How about the Carlyle group?

Don't even get me started on the oil companies.

Go to http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/USNSAHome.htm for addresses/phone numbers to do the same. They are the first on the spot, the only support organization working in south Mississippi right now. Please send them some money!!

3. I did and you should too
Whatever their problems with gay rights ideas---and show me one of these religious-based orgs that doesn't that isn't liberal Protestantism---they get the money ON THE GROUND. It isn't on infrastructure, PR and salaries. They put the money to work where it is needed.

Do I approve of their ideas? Nope, but they have a track record of delivering to victims.

4. In our area...
they are the only organization that daily deals with the homeless, HIV AIDS, mentally ill. Cut them some slack, they work with those that Bush never sees.

7. I heard a report on NPR this morning
SA volunteer at a Mississippi feeding station saying that he couldn't figure out why no other relief agencies have shown up yet. It's like the SA is doing it all on their own. Of course they're running out!

9. Why are they the only ones? Could it be RW religious
groups were only in it for the money and didn't actually get around to getting ready for any disasters (that would take money out of their pockets, you know). What's happening with the Red Cross?

8. The Salvation Army stockpiled food ahead of time
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 11:58 AM by DoYouEverWonder
because they read the hurricane forecasts for this year and decide that they needed a lot of food before one hit.

Smart people. Plus you don't see people getting rich working for the Salvation Army. They are going to be one of the true heroes of this disaster.

Please send them whatever you can.
