Young Republican creates bogus Web site as prank

PARKERSBURG - A young Republican from Wood County has created a bogus Web site linking U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., with antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan.

Jim Ashley II, 20, said he created www.Byrd06.com as a prank because of what was done to Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., a possible candidate for U.S. Senate, earlier this year. A bogus Capito campaign Web site was created that linked to a Byrd site, the Friends of Byrd.

''Two can play at that game,'' said Ashley, a former vice chairman of the Wood County Young Republicans.

...

No response will be made by Byrd, according to his spokesman, Tom Gavin.

''Mr. Ashley's made-up claims are too ridiculous to take seriously,'' Gavin said.

Ridiculous that Byrd would somehow agree with Cindy?? I somehow find that statement offensive even if it was directed at a Republican. I know the site was designed to harm Byrd but I am too damn dumb to understand how. Byrd should be proud to be associated with her. IMO

3. Well, did you see what was there?
I didn't -- there could have been some more specific nutso claims.

5. The GOP has a whole slew of little "Roves" in the making.
Just because a Yellow Elephant Repug claims (organization formerly known as College Republicans or Young Republicans) that this was done to one of their candidates - ergo it is fair game - doesn't necessarily mean that it actually happened. These people are masters at dirty tricks and then claiming the "other side" did them when they themselves are responsible. They study Lee Atwater's career as if it were a business model, hang onto every word of the O'Riellys, Malkins, Coulters, Lush Limpballs of the world and they worship at the knee of Rove. They know nothing but hateful, mean, nasty ways of campaigning. Their candidates are defective so they have to resort to "humor."

And when they get caught? Oh, its a joke. Yeah, right. Ha, ha, wink, wink. Everybody laugh. Just a frat boy prank. These guys don't have near enough things to keep them busy. How about a tour or two in Iraq to keep their humor in check? Think the jester's name and phone number should make its way to military recruiters.

I took the statement by Byrd's office to mean they were disavowing the nonsense on a fake web site and not Cindy Sheehan.

8. Hit the nail on the head!
I just wish that there was a way to prohibit the rest of politics from sliding furthur down the scale of ethics (and we thought it couldn't go lower.)

THese people have taken the 'dirty game' to an entirely new level. I know it is free speach, but the slander has got to stop. When it is a battle of who can make the greatest lie about the other party member instead of who can find the juiciest dirt, it truly is a lost cause.

4. Oh gross. This guy is an idiot. Please, folks,
don't assume that this asshat reflects the views of all us Parkersburgers. I'm seeing more and more signs that many people are starting to really see the light. The editorial pages of that republican hack rag the Parkersburg News has lately been filled with anti-* sentiment and almost nothing from his supporters.

This will backfire, as the only people who are opposed to Sheehan are the rednecks and screaming neocon idiots who wouldn't be voting for Byrd anyway. Most of the rest of the voting public backs her right to speak, and if Byrd is seen as supporting that right, then it is not going to hurt him in the least.
