Gas Listed At $3.92 At Garden City, Michigan Station - Some Stations Empty
http://www.clickondetroit.com/money/4919883/detail.html

GARDEN CITY -- Gas prices continue to rise as damage from Hurricane Katrina has contributed to a shortage of fuel in Michigan.

The price of unleaded regular at a Marathon station in Garden City was at $3.92, but the owner told Local 4 that the station has been closed for three weeks. Motorists have been stopping to take pictures of the sign as evidence of rising prices across the metro Detroit area, Local 4 reported.

A price of $2.91 for regular unleaded at a station at Gratiot Avenue and Rochell in Detroit was beginning to look like a bargain compared to some other locations, the station reported.

At 12 Mile Road and Masonic in Roseville, prices have reached $3.29.

A BP station at 12 Mile and Southfield was at $3.05, while prices at a station across the street jumped to $3.44.

38. $2.99 $3.11 $3.21 up .25 cents OVERNIGHT in Rochester, NY
in my hometown of Scottsville. Some stations in and around the area are in the 2.80-9 range for regular unleaded 87 octane, however I fear that will rapidly change into the $2.99(+) range very quickly..

Bottom line is... we're all gonna get hurt, since it's a big fat market. We'll be competing for oil from elsewhere now, driving up prices everywhere.

Minnesota is the only state that Ole Miss runs through. I'm at home on the east side of the river now and work on the west side. I haven't been out of the state in over a year (damn, I need a vacation) and I cross the river more than 10 times a week.

40. Yes, of course....
I knew/know it starts in Minnesota ("starts up in Minnesota..."), but was very sloppy in saying it separates MN from WI, as it only does so at the southernmost strip of the shared border, from the twins down.

Thanks.

gougers. I'd like to believe he will, but he is a repub. He was a damn good prosecutor when he worked in the Wayne County Prosecutor's office before becoming AG, so hopefully he will follow up.

Geez, it's not like we don't have a refinery or anything. I just drove by it a couple of hours ago. It smelled to me like it was working properly. I believe there's also a refinery just outside of Toledo, in Oregon, OH.

30. You are correct!!!
J.I.T is the cause for the rapid fluctuations. There is no surge capacity built into the oilfield/refinery/gas system. JIT aims to maximize efficincy by carrying minimal inventories. To have 1 million gallons of gasoline in storage st $3/gallon is to tie up $3 million dollars of capital that could be used to create more money by investments, etc.

The cause for the local shortages is the rapidly increasing prices. Myself, on my way to work this morning heard reports of a $0.50 increase beginning, I immediately topped off my tank, although I didn't need to. When many people do this in a short amount of time, local shortage occur.

Price caps will not work either. If gas is capped at $3.00 retail, what will happen when the wholesale price exceeds $3.00?? Is the station owner obliged to sell it for less than he buys it for??

If I may quote Full Metal Jacket, "We have all been served a big shit sandwich, and we're all gonna have to take a bite."

36. I passed by the same gas station three times today......
and there was a different price every time! At 5 PM on my way home from work it was at $3.12 (Macomb County, Michigan). This is definitely taking advantage of the situation.

42. In my corner of Michigan...
Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 10:24 PM by susanna
we had a .30 fluctuation in a one-mile radius. We're in an oil refinery/truck route area downriver. (Usually we're way cheaper than the suburbs because our gas doesn't have to be transported too far from refinery to pump.)

The prices:
3.29 near the freeway...
3.19 a little off the beaten path...
2.99 this station always lags a bit in raising prices (so everyone goes there when prices start jumping)

edit: clarity

43. I paid $3.29 here in mid-Michigan today.
I don't expect it to go down again much, though.

45. $3.55 in Traverse City yesterday
I nearly keeled over at that!! It jumped at least 60 cents a gallon, and that's just for regular unleaded, no fancy stuff here. Unfortuantely I was on fumes, and yesterday was payday. I wonder if I can get unemployment when I can't afford to go to work anymore???

52. Tourist city+holiday weekend=gouging
I'm going to St. Joe, but I frequently go to Traverse City because my grandparents live there. If I had money, I'd live up on the Old Mission Penninsula, where Grandpa does. It's such a beautiful place.

51. Yesterday it was $3.29 where I filled up
I passed a couple of places where it was $3.15, but they had long lines. I'm going out of town tomorrow, and wanted to fill up in case there was a shortage today. I think prices will drop a little next week, after they are done gouging us over the holiday, and when refineries outside of the gulf region are maximizing production.
