Florida's problems in 2000 vote loom over secretary of state race

By MICHAEL A. LINDENBERGER

The Courier-Journal

Three years after voting problems in Florida emphasized a need for election reform, Kentuckians will have their first chance to select a new chief elections officer Nov.4 when they vote for a secretary of state.

Both candidates say that making sure Florida's 2000 problems don't happen in Kentucky ranks among their top priorities.

"What happened in Florida was election fraud at its worst," said Democrat Russ Maple, 65, a former Jefferson County commissioner who is seeking his first statewide office.

Republican C.M. "Trey" Grayson, 31, a Fort Mitchell attorney who is seeking his first elective office, said the problems in Florida have raised the stakes for election officials across the country, with an added premium on fair and open elections. (snip/...)

1. What happened in Florida was election fraud at its worst
Yep. Head 'em off at the pass. They want to block off our votes at the source. Glad to see people citing the crime to prevent future ones.

2. Wait
I thought they made the office an appointed one. I thought the legislature also elminated her position.

4. Would someone clue in Russ Maple
about the REAL election "problems" and BBV? I have a feeling its makes little difference which party has the SOS if they float above the expertise necessary to fight fraud and swallow the GOP conventional wisdom about election "reform".
