EU governments to tackle defence issues
EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU leaders in Brussels today (16 October) will tackle the thorny issue of defence amid reports that France, Germany and the UK are working on a common paper on EU military issues.

The EU's defence policy has risen up the Union's agenda since the UK recently indicated a shift in its stance towards France and Germany - two countries eager to forge ahead with integration in this area.

Closer co-operation in defence would be the most important step for the EU since the establishment of the single currency - and is no less controversial.

This could be the built-up of an alternative to NATO, the U.S. is pretty concerned about it. See: http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT.com/StoryFT/FullStory&c=StoryFT&cid=1059480623454&p=1012571727102

1. I woild not be shock to see EU re-arm.
Many are in fear of the US. Would it be a shock, if after all these years, we get EU to arm because of fear of Us.? Bush is the true man to bring people together. Every one in the world on one side and us on the other.

2. EU is already armed
EU does not try to arm itself AGAINST the U.S. There is too much in common. But there is a significant shift in security policies towards INDEPENDCE from U.S. hegemony as seen in the NATO.

BTW, France and U.K. already have nuclear arms.
