School Bus Drivers On the Watch For Possible Terrorists
School Bus Drivers On the Watch For Possible Terrorists

DANBURY, Conn. --School bus drivers are learning to watch out for a new kind of danger.

Beginning this month, the Connecticut School Transportation Association will begin offering free training to teach bus drivers how to evaluate potential terrorist threats.

About 200 of the state's safety instructors will be trained so they can teach drivers at the regional and local level. The training will include who and what to look for and how to perform routine inspections of buses before picking up students.

6. Hmmm, this is too easy!
First clue- Any person with an IED strapped to his chest is not someone to let on your bus
Second clue- Any person holding an AK47 or something similar is not allowed on your bus
Third clue- Any person with a sign saying "Look out for me, I'm a terrorist who hates you for your freedoms" is not allowed on the bus
I'm sure you guys can come up with better ones.... :)

13. Hey, wait a minute!
We should support the free speech rights of terrorists to carry signs that say "Look out for me, I'm a terrorist who hates you for your freedoms." Making them walk to school just isn't fair.

32. You don't really need to be *ON* a bus to blow it up
All you need is a couple guys on a motorcycle to pull along side and either suicide bomb it or stick a bomb with magnets on the thing.

8. My former neighbor refused to allow her children to ride the bus
to school after 9-11 for this very reason. She is convinced that terrorists are going to start targeting American children riding to and from school. As nuts as this sounds to us, there are idiots out there who totally swallow this shit.

16. Can I buy a vowel....
Some clue that there is a terrorist on you school bus.....
1) Instead of saying Good Morning, you are greeted by Die you supressive imperalist tool.
2) The kindergarteners sport an unusually large back pack and igloo 32 qt lunch cooler.
3) The girls wear long black uniforms and cover their faces to prevent sunburn (even in Dec).
4) You notice your bus back fires alot and you have holes in your roof.
5) Instead of singing on field trips-the kids uulate.
6) The fifth grader boys have 5 o'clock shadows at 7 am.
7) Many of the kids live in root cellars.......

20. Anybody work in a school district or go to see their kids in school?
Here in NY, since 2002, anyone who works in the district has to be fingerprinted and checked: from teachers to janitors. You need to wear a badge the whole time you are in the school. If you leave the district, you will have to be fingerprinted and checked all over again: at the cost of $125 TO YOU. They played around with the idea of issuing ID badges to the KIDS, but that didn't sit too well with the parents.

If you are a visitor to the school, there is a security guard in a car blocking the entrance way. He checks you over and asks where you are going. Once you get into the school, you are stopped by a "greeter". In the elementary/middle schools, you sign your name, the time you entered the building, and when you leave you sign out. They issue you a visitor's sticker that you must wear the entire time you are in the building.

In the high schools, there is usually a security guard alongside the entrance way "greeter". "Greeters" with walkie talkies are stationed throughout the hallways and security personnel "patrol" the hallways and the grounds.

A few times in the past couple of years when we went on Orange Alert, they actually locked down the schools. The kids and staff were not allowed to leave the building until the school day was over.

I know we want our kids safe, but what a way to live in a free society.

26. I believe some of these measures were long overdue
Before 9/11, anyone could just walk in my elementary school. All doors were always unlocked, due to the district's 'open schools' policy. Since then, we have kept all doors locked, put a buzzer on one door, require visitors to sign in and all employees wear ID badges. The district also fixed all broken classroom door locks and re-keyed many buildings. After teaching in a room without a lock for many years, I appreciate being able to lock my door now. The district also bought weather radios for most classrooms and updated our computers. And for the first time in more than two decades, I now have a phone in my classroom.

All staff members district wide have also received extensive safety training. And we have new emergency evacuation plans. The local police dept helped schools develop emergency plans.

As a result, I feel much safer at school now. We have also had fewer thefts. For years, we could expect thieves to enter our building and steal purses, etc at least once or twice a yearly. We also had more vandalism to our cars in the parking lot. That has virtually stopped.

I think most parents appreciate knowing their kids are safe at school. I am thrilled to have updated computers and a telephone.

34. I ran into big trouble with the principal when
Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 09:37 AM by LibDemAlways
I suggested that my daughter's elementary school take some pro-active safety measures. This is a quiet suburban community and the principal and school board members went ballistic when I began doing some basic research into California law and determined the district was in violation of a law mandating safety plans for all schools. They argued this wasn't necessary. Meanwhile...

The school borders a public park. There is no fence between the school and the park. One of the student bathrooms, left open all day, is easily accessible from the park and not monitered by anybody.

No one in the school wears any sort of identification. There are multiple unmonitered entrances onto the school grounds. Students are frequently sent off by themselves on errands around the school property.

My daughter has now gone off to middle school, which is more self-contained and has more safety measures in place. The elementary school continues to be a lawsuit waiting to happen.
