Army counters statement on Saddam
Army counters statement on Saddam

Responds to claim by officer that former dictator was ‘recently’ in Tikrit

-snips-

TIKRIT, Iraq, Oct. 14 — A U.S. Army spokeswoman said Tuesday that the military has no reports that Saddam Hussein is hiding in his hometown of Tikrit in northern Iraq, countering a statement by an Army officer who said Monday that Saddam had “recently” been in the area.

“WE DO NOT have intelligence that he is and has been specifically in Tikrit,” said Maj. Josslyn Aberle, spokeswoman for the 4th Infantry Division, which controls a large swath of the country’s north. “Because if we did, we would have the capability to act on it.”
But she said there has been intelligence that former regime members — possibly even Saddam — had traveled through the area.

Army Maj. Troy Smith, executive officer of the 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, told reporters on Monday that Saddam had been hiding in Tikrit and was believed to be exerting influence within the resistance that has been killing U.S. soldiers.

1. Army General: Can someone please tell Rumsfeld how to actually tie a noose
? It's not that hard. If we are going to throw this damn thing over the head of Hussein (OSAMA BIN LADEN!?! remember him?) and tighten the thing then maybe we should learn to actually tie the knot properly because the guy seems to keep escaping from it...

8. NICE PICTURE
Then they wonder why all those people hate us when you subject people to this type of abuse. How would we react if our P.O.W.'s were treated like this.

7. Damage is done; bury the "correction"
Trumpted at the top of page 1 in USA Today -- leading the TV news everywhere. But, wait, no, sorry, we didn't mean it at all, never mind.

Once again, how many people will notice the "retraction" on page A23?

10. Now that we've had the official denial
I'm prepared to believe the original story.

And what's the point of these goddamn bags?!? I mean, besides humiliation, which the occupation forces seem to excel at. The sight of them sickens me.

12. Watch for another one of these ...
... every time things get hot for Bush. When will the media stop running with these rumors? OK, which will it be next time? Raise the security alert level, "noose tightening" on Osama, "noose tightening" on Saddam, jack of diamonds "ali the puppy furrier" captured? Which one?
