Analysts: Trade Deal Would Cost Taxpayers

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration's free-trade agreement with Central America would cost taxpayers $50 million a year in loan forfeitures by sugar farmers, the Congressional Budget Office says.

An administration official said Thursday that the analysis was unrealistic and that there would be virtually no cost under sugar provisions in the deal.

The CBO released its estimate as House leaders planned for a vote next week on the Central American Free Trade Agreement. It would remove or lower trade barriers with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and he Dominican Republic.

Overall, CAFTA would cost the U.S. about $4.4 billion over the next 10 years, primarily in lost tariffs, the CBO said.

1. That's Just the Tip of the Iceberg
Add in the loss of jobs and benefits and manufacturing base. The spread of tropical disease and pests. The free flow of unwanted people.

4. spread of disease and pests
is so big. Here in CA we have routine spraying of cities and crops with deadly chemicals to stop various pests that have migrated here.

2. hot damn what a find
Now *that's* what I call breaking news. Thank you so much for digging that up.

I can't get any momentum to make "CAFTA" a DU Activist activity.

Any help would be greatly appreciated if anyone reading this volunteered.

It's important, this is yet another turkey outsourcing trade agreement.
