Ga. court removes Ten Commandments
Ga. court removes Ten Commandments
Jul 20, 2005, 17:39 GMT

WINDER, GA, United States (UPI) -- An Atlanta-area county courthouse took down a framed copy of the Ten Commandments after a federal judge ruled the display unconstitutional.

Senior U.S. District Judge William O`Kelley forbade "any substantially similar and unconstitutional presentation of the Ten Commandments," and ordered Barrow County to pay $150,000 in attorneys` fees by to the American Civil Liberties Union.

Jody Hice, head of the Ten Commandments lobbying group and a pastor in Winder, Ga., told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution he was "extremely disappointed."

The display was donated to the courthouse in 2002, but the ACLU became involved when an anonymous complaint was received the following year.

1. Winder is only about 20-30 minutes from me.
I knew they would be pissed aoubt the decision, but at least they obeyed the court, unlike the Judge in Alabama who refused and was removed from the bench!

As far as I know, Winder is a very red area, and I'm sure they're doing a lot of cryingabout this.

2. Barrow county is not in the metro Atlanta area.
Edited on Wed Jul-20-05 02:53 PM by CottonBear
It is close to Athens-Clarke County which is in NE GA. I have friends who live in Statham.

The reporter must not be from Atlanta or Georgia. This story has been front-page Athens-Banner Herald news for the past year. Thank goodness this episode is over. The county would not allow a display about other religions. They removed one that was put up next to the 10 Commandments. Damn Hypocrites. :grr:
