Breaking: NBC/WSJ Poll--Bush at 46% approval
Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 06:07 PM by bluestateguy
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8561443/

WASHINGTON - The last two weeks certainly have been eventful ones in America and across the globe: President Bush gave a prime-time speech on Iraq and attended a G-8 summit in Scotland; Sandra Day O’Connor announced her retirement from the Supreme Court (with perhaps another retirement on the way); and suicide bombers killed approximately 50 people in London. After these events, the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that Bush’s overall job rating has slipped and that his rating for being “honest and straightforward” has dropped to its lowest point.

Regarding Bush’s upcoming pick to replace O’Connor on the court, moreover, the poll shows that strong majorities believe Bush would be taking a step in the right direction if he appointed a woman and someone who supports references to God in public life. But a majority also thinks that Bush would take a wrong step if he chose someone who would vote to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion.

18. I guess we have finally become immune to 9/11 imagery
The horrors of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and the resulting blowback of the London bombings, have finally shaken the sheep-like confidence many Americans had on Bush. The Rove affair has also exposed Bush as another lying politician, like Nixon.

What I notice among Chimp voters out here is that they're pissed--shrub is busy killing our troops in Iraq, and bin laden is free.

60. Yep, there it is, folks. Some things are reparable and some are not.
This one is not:

his rating for being “honest and straightforward” has dropped to its lowest point.

Once people lose their fundamental trust in your character, they do not recover it. Bush seems at last to have crossed the threshold.

Edited on Fri Jul-15-05 01:05 AM by calimary
if we can take back the House of Reps next year and get IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDINGS going...

Don't rule it out. By then, who knows how many people inside his White House will have been indicted ... and how much bad press there will be. Which means even lower numbers. Which means republi-CONS on the ropes. Which means angry voters who will be letting their reps know, and more republi-CONS getting acquainted with the unemployment line. Which means, just like in the Nixon end-times, you won't be able to find two people who will admit they voted for him. And his coattails will take a LOT of republ-CONS down with him. Back in the Watergate days, nobody even wanted to admit they'd voted Republican ANYTHING. All you had to be, to be considered a shoo-in in the next election, was a Democrat. There was such a pox on the house of the GOP that they knew going into the next elections that they were dead meat. The party was demoralized, publicly shamed, totally disgraced.

Which is exactly where we like 'em. AND exactly what they deserve.

We just have to help it along. A suggested quip: "...that's what you get when you vote Republican." POISON THE WELL - so it's unthinkable to even consider a GOP candidate for municipal dog-poo pick-up enforcement. This is EXTREMELY important because we want this gang of thugs SET BACK for a generation - or MORE. We want them so battered and disgraced by this whole bush mess that they'll need years to regroup and finish licking all their wounds. Besides, we're gonna NEED all that time to clean up after them and fix everything they've broken and fucked up. The longer we can keep them down the better. The better for all of us - throughout our nearly-ruined country AND throughout the rest of the seriously-compromised world.

POISON THE WELL.

42. They also tried to drag the Dems into this....
Norah O'Donnell was spinning herself silly, saying the Dems aren't much better in the eyes of the public since they haven't provided "any alternatives," and that this survey reflects an anti-Washington sentiment, not an anti-Bush sentiment.
They followed that up with a panel on how Rove would never lie to a grand jury, so no problem here.

The Dems. have never offered any alternatives, so therefore they need to attack Rove. I saw Norah and some Repuke Senator or Congressman state this.

I picked 37% along time ago. It kind of rings a bell - Mr. 37%= dubby. We can only expect the ratings to drop maybe another ten points if all the bad stuff comes out. The other 27% are unreachable cultists who will proudly go down with the ship.

15. Link and Story
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8561443/

The last two weeks certainly have been eventful ones in America and across the globe: President Bush gave a prime-time speech on Iraq and attended a G-8 summit in Scotland; Sandra Day O’Connor announced her retirement from the Supreme Court (with perhaps another retirement on the way); and suicide bombers killed approximately 50 people in London.

The survey, which was conducted from July 8-11 among 1,009 adults, and which has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, finds that respondents, by a 49 percent-to-46 percent margin, disapprove of Bush’s job performance. That’s a drop from the last NBC/Journal poll in May, when 47 percent approved and 47 percent disapproved. In addition, the only time when Bush’s job rating has been worse was in June 2004, when 45 percent approved of his performance.

Furthermore, only 41 percent give Bush good marks for being “honest and straightforward” — his lowest ranking on this question since he became president. That’s a drop of nine percentage points since January, when a majority (50 percent to 36 percent) indicated that he was honest and straightforward. This finding comes at a time when the Bush administration is battling the perception that its rhetoric doesn’t match the realities in Iraq, and also allegations that chief political adviser Karl Rove leaked sensitive information about a CIA agent to a reporter. (The survey, however, was taken just before these allegations about Rove exploded into the current controversy.)

The London bombings should lay to waste any more steer manure about the "We fight them there so we won't have to fight them here" rationale.

And now Karl. Well, he's standing by a friend. That's about the closest to defending Bush anybody can get over that.

Maybe next week it will be down in the thirties where it belongs.

28. 46% might be about right for WSJ crowd.
Business is his quiet base often forgotten in his public lust for conservative evangelical votes. Business likes his business policies (although he may be being stymied in getting to economic agenda by other issues :D ) For them to give him over all job a 46%, you'd only have to have about 5% of pro-business think, "I hate Iraq, but I'm lovin' the military-industrial business opportunities."

I really love that 41% don't think he's honest or straightforward. For a pro-business publication, that's significant. And much more in keeping with your perception that his ratings should be lower.

43. I simply cannot believe 46% of Americans are BONEHEADS.
WTF is wrong with this country.

Even if Bush's approval rating was 15% I'd still be in a state of disbelief. This is horrible news.

Yes, he's easy to hate, but remember, he's still the most powerful moron on the planet. It's gonna take a truck load of bad mojo to bring him down. The question is, do he and his cronies have the requisite truckload of hubris to actually do it to themselves? Hope springs eternal...

...hell, he openly didn't have a majority of votes in 2000, and acted like he had 70% of the vote. To these guys, legitimacy is not even part of the equation. Holding and exercising power, is all they care about. And they'll do anything to get it.

63. His personal honesty ratings really took a hit
Maybe some are waking up to the fact this jerk has about ruined our country for profits to the rich globalists.

A theocracy, as Bushies want, is clearly not what Americans want. They want religion but not the Bushie's cult type.

67. Bush honesty rating drops to lowest point
Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 11:09 PM by JABBS
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/8561443/

WASHINGTON - The last two weeks certainly have been eventful ones in America and across the globe: President Bush gave a prime-time speech on Iraq and attended a G-8 summit in Scotland; Sandra Day O’Connor announced her retirement from the Supreme Court (with perhaps another retirement on the way); and suicide bombers killed approximately 50 people in London. After these events, the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that Bush’s overall job rating has slipped and that his rating for being “honest and straightforward” has dropped to its lowest point. ...

Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 10:48 PM by Seabiscuit
i.e. Brain-dead?

How could anyone with a brain ever even entertain the notion that Bush has an honest bone in his body, much less believe it, much less say that to a pollster.

That's damned depressing.

81. I don't think some Chimpsters will ever change.
I'd be interested to know what his real level of support is, but I see quite a few cars with Chimp 'n Cheney stickers still. They are like the Nixon supporters after Watergate, or the Spinboat liars in support of a mythos of honerable missions in Vietnam.

Has to be cognative dissonance. Its hard to accept that shameful and dishonerable things were done by those whom one ideologically supports. Easier to circle the wagons and defend a fortress mentality.

I am reminded of how after Germany's defeat in WW I, there was a myth that Germany was stabbed in the back by the November criminals who signed the Armistace in 1918 - just as it was poised for victory.

If there are a few million 'Murkens who still support their image of the Chimp, then we are really talking about a cult. Cult leaders have no accountability.
In their eyes, neither does the Chimp. Instead we are dealing with a kind of Alice in Wonderland situation. I am glad the bumper stickers are out there, It tells me whom to avoid talking to regarding certain subjects. I do feel sorry for them however.

that person is either not rational or demonstrating serious cognative dissonance.

Did you ever hear of the 3 bumber sticker law ?

Its something my wife and I came up with. It states you may have up to 3 bumper stickers on a vehicle. Any more than that and you are discredited as being a flake or ranting flake. Applies to libruls and chimpsters alike.

It seems there's always a spin, but this one definately give me hope that someday, the 41% will wake up and smell the large pile that's been dumped on them.

Example: do Google image search (in this case "polar bear") click on an image you like, then click on the "view image " option. The url will appear like this:

(I put spaces in it so the image did not appear). Unaltered, the url comes up as:
