Central Birmingham on alert (England)

Police have evaculated tens of thousands from central Birmingham; defence expert warns of more attacks.

10 July 2005

The heart of Birmingham, Britain's second biggest city, has been closed down after police found a suspicious package on a double decker bus.

Tens of thousands of people were evacuated from pubs, clubs and nightclubs following what police call intelligence of a substantial threat. Controlled explosions have taken place at four locations.

Police say the scare is not linked to the London commuter attacks.
