Another Madrid type bombing?
| 2. BBC Link - "reports of walking wounded" |
| 3. News hasn't hit the media here yet. |
| 4. British Transport Police |
via Reuters and 5 Live say explosions at Aldgate, Edgeware Road, Kings Cross, Old Street and St Pancras. They still say it's a power surge problem.
The power outage and mention of power surge suggests a transformer explosion.
is that a power surge caused a problem with the transformer at Liverpool Street which ran up the line to the next transformer at Edgeware Road. No suggestion of terror at the moment.
We don't do terror, we do annoyed. I'm pissed off at having a half-hour walk after the tube shut down (from experience, I know that trying to get a bus or taxi when this happens is usually futile). Police like headless chickens everywhere. Russell Square station cordoned off. Heard what sounded like a distant explosion from my office at about 0947.
| 55. Sounds like a big mess there at the moment |
Take care of yourself, this power surge story doesn't sound kosher.
| 7. As usual, Only CNN/International is Live here on U.S. Cable |
CNBC has a graphic up, but they were still talking about BS
| 8. Blair is toast if this is a bombing! |
If this turns out to be a bombing by Islamic fundamentalists, then Tony Blair's politcal career is finished. All because he went along with Bush's invasion. Remember what happened to Jose Maria Aznar in Spain after the bombings in Madrid?
John
| 11. SO fast to label it a "transformer". |
Aznar didn't lose because he sided with Bush on the Iraq invasion. The Spanish people had little love for that, but when he trie to pin the rap on the Basque separatists, he was TOAST. Before then, he was believed to have a small but significant lead.
pnorman
| 69. Even with the election behind him, how can he face his people? |
With pushing his country into an invasion that the British people NEVER wanted, he should have known full well of the implications. He made the British people sitting ducks. His party is going to have to bring pressure upon Blair to pull his forces out of Iraq.
John
| 94. I was referring specifically to Anzar. |
But you're no doubt right about Blair. He went WAAAAY beyond merely "going along with Bush". He was the chief enabler. Without his whorish support, there'd have been NO cover for that bogus "Coalition of the Willing". And without that, it's quite possible that Bush would have hesitated. I'n sure the British people know that, and also know WHO to blame.
pnorman

"British Transport police said the incident, which was reported at 8.49am between Liverpool Street and Aldgate stations on the Metropolitan line, was believed to have been caused by a collision between two trains, a power cut or a power cable exploding... BTP confirmed there were "walking wounded", and said paramedics had responded to one report of a person classed as "life at risk"." http://www.guardian.co.uk/transport/Story/0,2763,152308... Holy crap - I've got lots of friends in London and hope they're all OK!

| 22. Holy cannoli, that is quite a 'coincidental' timing |
| 23. from the rush of mixed excuses, I suspect terror |
power surge is implausible. collision would have been known by now.
| 38. I don't know about that...... |
if a power surge blew a transformer, those things go with a pretty huge bang....if the safety mechanisms failed and the power surge went down the line, that could blow other equipment too.
Electrical explosions can be very powerful.
| 24. No newsflashes on BBC1, 2, ITV, Ch4 or Ch5 - BBC website crashed. |

< http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/46590... > Thursday, 7 July, 2005, 09:02 GMT 10:02 UK People hurt in Tube 'power surge'Several people have been injured after explosions blamed on a power surge led to the whole London Underground network being closed down. British Transport Police said some of the power surges had caused explosions. Surges took place at Aldgate, Edgware Road, King's Cross, Old Street and Russell Square stations. A spokesman said there were "walking wounded" at Liverpool Street station but one person's life was reported to be "at risk". London Fire Brigade said four crews were at Liverpool Street and more were on their way. A British Transport Police spokesman said that emergency services were dealing with reports of an explosion at 0849 BST on the Metropolitan Line between Liverpool Street and Aldgate. One passenger, who had left the Tube at Fenchurch Street Station, and walked to Aldgate East, told BBC Five Live that he saw injured people. (more at link above)
| 35. They are now suggesting |
a bomb exploded in a litter bin at Russell Square - the site of the bus wreck. HOWEVER they are using buses as treatment centres so it is just possible that witnesses seeing injured people on buses might misinterpret what they are seeing.
| 40. Sky reports "roof of a bus blown off" |
| 36. It seems a bit quick to judge it as a "power surge". |
Edited on Thu Jul-07-05 04:16 AM by Cascadian
I am listening to BBC News right now on the internet, it's sounding more and more like bombings. There are people with cuts, soot and blood covered faces. Not what you would call a "power surge'!
John
| 37. See my post 11. Same thought. |

Especially if the roof of a bus was blown off.

eye witness quoted on 5 Live.
| 52. Roof of Bus Blown off near the Ambassador Hotel |
Is what a eye witness is saying now on CNN/International.
They are abandoning all the busses now.
| 68. I walked past that hotel at about 0935 |
Russell Square tube (nearby) was already cordoned off, but there was no exploded bus then, unless I'm the world's most unobservant person. That could have been the bang I heard at 0947, but I though that came from the Kings Cross direction.
| 73. They say the bus is in Tavistock Place |

going towards Russell Square.
| 86. Sounds like you might be one of the luckiest people in London |

I think that's about the time they said it exploded (9:47am)
A coworker was in the square around 1000, and didn't see anything. This is all very strange.
| 91. Holy shit! Glad you're OK! |
| 95. That bang was most likely the bus explosion. |
You're real damn lucky to walk away from that...
| 107. Aren't you lucky? At least you're okay. |
You don't believe the stories that this was all a power surge? The more from what I am hearing listening to out of London via streaming audio, it all has bombing written all over it. Just my opinion.
John
| 41. BBC reports that Scotland Yard says there are numerous casualties. |
"Power surge" my ass!
John
An exploding transformer is pretty spectacular. Don't be too quick to blame terror when a transformer accident is the more likely explanation.
wont blow the top off a bus in the street overhead.
| 56. That's a separate problem |
I was talking about the tube explosions.
I'm just saying, don't panic and scream terror before you know the facts.
| 54. With explosions in several different places? |
Plus a bus blowing up outside the tube system? From what I have been hearing out of London and what they are reporting, this has bombing written all over it. It's just what I think.

Union officials said their sources had told them there had been at least one explosive device on the Underground. A Sky News producer who was evacuated from Kings Cross and was walking towards Russell Square also reported seeing an explosion on a bus. He said the blast was caused by a bomb, and said people with "blood injuries" emerged from the bus. Scotland Yard could not immediately confirm the report. Article continues British Transport police said several power surges had caused explosions across the network at Aldgate, Old Street, Kings Cross, Russell Square and Edgware Road. Emergency services crews attended wounded passengers outside Aldgate station, and there were reports of passengers covered in soot emerging from King's Cross. Travellers emerged from tunnels covered in blood. Eyewitnesses reported "multiple casualties" at Liverpool Street. One witness who had been in a train at the time of the explosions reported seeing "bodies everywhere" in the carriages and limbs lying in on the floor. Emergency services reported several injuries. Tube network shutting down means the regular buses are packed (that's why I walked). Timing bombs to go off on the regular buses after the tube closure would be an obvious tactic, but at that time on a rainy morning I'd expect the tour buses to be fairly light on passengers.

There's BBC London and ITV London, but they're part of BBC and ITV and those stations cut to regional news programmes every so often.

It's weird, because if breaking news happens in an American city, usually all the local affiliates will cut in rather than the networks in that city.

| 120. Local news in Scotland says the attack appears coordinated |
First bombs went off in the subway, then after enough time had passed to get all the people out onto the streets and busses, then the busses exploded. Looks like a full blown attack of a 9/11 stature. News there reports not sure who's behind it yet.

Might be a good day to stay home if you rely on public transportation.

these cities and others are checking their mass transit systems
| Don't know about DC but New York is always vulnerable |
Crammed with people with backpacks and briefcases all over the place plus homeless wrapped in coats in July and not enough cops to go around. They've even cut back on toll booth clerks.
In brief, it's suicide bomber's paradise.
At least in New York little visible security. I hope they have some sort of detection system but I doubt it--the system is just too big.
Londons Underground is similar in size and age to New York.
Those poor people.

Because of the modus operandi of several bombs going off practically simultaneously, and no warning. The IRA usually gives a 10 minute warning, AQ does not.

The media is a joke.
Bad news for the UK but then look who's their leader. Anyone see the connection? Countries with crappy leaders get bombed. America will be the next target once again soon enough.
The Brits should throw out Blair today. Although I'm sure they'll have to rally around him like we did Bush after 9/11.
| 188. America's corporate media doesn't care about Britain |

| 216. thoughts are with our friends in the UK. |
| 218. It's just sinking in....and I'm just getting FUCKING ANGRY!!! |
Angry with the cowardly, ignorant, evil fuckers who did this.
Angry at Bush for insisting on poking away at a hornets' nest.
Angry at Blair for going along with Bush's fucking crusade.
But mostly angry with the morally corrupt and utterly hypocritical pieces of shit that consider that indiscriminate bombing of civilians is an appropriate way of furthering their aims and their bastardised version of religion.
