No Bounce: Bush Job Approval Unchanged by War Speech
President Bush’s televised address to the nation produced no noticeable bounce in his approval numbers, with his job approval rating slipping a point from a week ago, to 43%, in the latest Zogby International poll. And, in a sign of continuing polarization, more than two-in-five voters (42%) say they would favor impeachment proceedings if it is found the President misled the nation about his reasons for going to war with Iraq.

The Zogby America survey of 905 likely voters, conducted from June 27 through 29, 2005, has a margin of error of +/-3.3 percentage points.

Just one week ago, President Bush’s job approval stood at a previous low of 44%—but it has now slipped another point to 43%, despite a speech to the nation intended to build support for the Administration and the ongoing Iraq War effort. The Zogby America survey includes calls made both before and after the President’s address, and the results show no discernible “bump” in his job approval, with voter approval of his job performance at 45% in the final day of polling.

. . .

In a more significant sign of the weakness of the President’s numbers, more “Red State” voters—that is, voters living in the states that cast their ballots for the Bush-Cheney ticket in 2004—now rate his job performance unfavorably, with 50% holding a negative impression of the President’s handling of his duties, and 48% holding a favorable view. The President also gets negative marks from one-in-four (25%) Republicans—as well as 86% of Democrats and 58% of independents. (Bush nets favorable marks from 75% of Republicans, 13% of Democrats and 40% of independents.)

When there is no bounce at all, that means his base didn't even attempt to put a positive spin on it. I'm beginning to believe that Survey USA chart showing his numbers down in the southern states may be dead on. Oh, this is good.

it involves another major attack here and/or an attack on Iran. Rove et al will really try again in early September. This was their 4th of July push which failed.

49. I am wondering if even
that will work. Another war on top of the one we are in, he isn't believeable any more. Another attack? They do seem to be preempting their responsibility by their saying that the liberals are to blame. That may be part of what Rove was setting up and old Limpballs too. I hope that that is wrong though and it doesn't happen and even they couldn't go that far. May be hoping for too much considering how far they will go.

They're not misunderestimating him anymore.

I like the impeachment angle - this PROVES it is NO LONGER UNTHINKABLE. Impeachment now is VERY MUCH INDEED an option! We need to continue to spread and reinforce that.

So much for the "popular wartime president."

You're SO over, george. Keep talking. You'll wind up doing a lot of our (hard) work for us.

5. But why isn't it more?
The question is "if it is shown he lied to get us into the war". How could only 42% support impeachment under that case? It should be 75% (with only the nutcase righties against). What a friggin' country!

25. With the electronic voting machines controlled by the GOP, hope of....
...gaining control of Congress should be set aside for the time being.

Instead, we should be concentrating on gaining as much support from the GOP side of the aisle as possible and taking care of impeachment in a bipartisan way. We're gaining GOP support rather quickly these days, and that will snowball with each additional revelation of wrongdoing by the NeoCons.

29. That's why those other guys win elections.
And we lose. They present a unified message and look like they have their act together. The Democrats are all over the place--and with twits like "Democrats" who support Bush, they are too diverse. Being a Democrat has to mean something! Or do you disagree?

We need to do exactly what the Repugs do. You support core Democratic values or bye-bye. Then around election time we talk about how big our tent is. That way we can be unified and present a real plan for governing. Except we'll get it right, not like the Repugs recipe for failure.

They probably have more than 14% who support the Dems but we don't see that because of the coercion, threats, whatever those sleazeballs do. Democrats either pull that on each other, at least most certainly NOT to the same extreme, or otherwise they are lousy at it, and ineffectual. Nonetheless, it's something to consider.

You might be surprised at some of the comments they're making about Herr Busch, Iraq, and the economy.

Don't sell these people short just because they talk differently, wear boots, like country music, and like to hunt. They're getting pretty pissed off these days, and I'd rather have them fighting with us, than against us.

Why did we stop talking about 9/11 happening on his watch? The FBI whistle blower from Mn. is running for Congress next year. I think we should start talking about it again and tie it in to her campaign.
The 'connect the dots' strategy.
Our first attack happened on his watch. He had warnings. He did nothing.

Believe me, we need national support. John Kline, the incumbant, is nothing more than a Bush/DeLay yes man. He needs to go, and Rowley is the only person who can beat him. This is a pretty right-wing district, yet Rowley has much more national name recognition and she is well respected among moderates. Trust me, nobody on this board would like Kline(except for the Freepers who may be lurking). Please everyone take Carla's advice, and help us win this thing.

so clinton got a little skittish after the bile spewing ring-wing chased him, his family & friends through every gutter in the known world & then some = still are for that matter.

this bush person has bald faced lied not only to the congress, the senate, and the nation but to the entire world and done so with a smirking pride

it is well past time for bush to be ridden out of wash d.c., he doesn't like it there anyway. it needs to be suggested to him in earnest via impeachment if need be, that that is his option.

if it was good enough for: r.m. nixon  it is plenty good enough for: g.w. bush, here & now ~

51. I agree with Impeachment, but feel compelled to add:

Impeachment must be followed by trial for treason. It's my firm opinion that sending our men and women to fight a trumped up war just so that he could be seen as a "war president" as he told his ghost writer in 1999, fully qualifies as treason. And a quilty verdict should be followed by his travels to the Hague for his much awaited war crimes trial.

Who knows, Mad George may just wind up to be the most reviled person in history, right up there with Adolph, Ghengis Khan, and Attilla.

70. Just keep on repeating it. Keep the drumbeat going. Impeachment...
Impeachment...

Impeachment...

But unlike what happened with Clinton, this one needs to be pursued all out - so we achieve not only impeachment but also REMOVAL FROM OFFICE. It would be nice to go all the way. If it were to do that, it would mean several things (all good):

-That those in Congress who voted for impeachment, and those in the Senate who voted to convict on the articles of impeachment, had been motivated by momentum, the facts they finally had to face (and swallow), and the input from loads and loads of angry constituents and unavoidable numbers in all the different polls. This would happen if public opinion dictated it unavoidably.

-People mad enough to want to see an impeachment all the way through toconviction and removal from office means there would be extremely widespread concurrence that the offenses that prompted this were egregious enough to warrant prosecution. Once the public turns against you, your goose is thoroughly cooked.

Remember, Nixon finally fell after public opinion so soured on him that his own party realized they had to abandon him. It was a handful of his own party members who went to him and told him he had no support in Congress, and he'd be impeached for certain if he didn't leave voluntarily. He chose to jump rather than be pushed. And his own party abandoned him because public opinion forced their hand. If they'd had a majority of phone calls and letters and appeals to remain supportive, they would have done so. They bailed on him because the tide had turned back home.

Keep it up, guys! Impeachment is no longer a taboo subject. It is no longer unthinkable. It is no longer an impossible dream. This poll proves people are actually entertaining the notion now, and are refusing to flatly rule it out. That it's even entering the discussion in the polls is MAXIMUM SIGNIFICANT.

36. Fellow DU:ers, I want to confess to you
that I have waited 5 years for this day. I have waited patiently, I've torn my hair out, I've been homicidal at times, other times I've lifted a shaking finger to get rid of Bush if he accidentally appears on the radio waves.

It's been absolute Political Hell these past 5 years. I've waited for the day when I get to see Bush stand in front of his electorate, sweating, his forehead in deep grooves, his hair turning white almost overnight.

As he stammers and stutters, his little facade is coming down upon him, his house of cards collapses on this evil, vile weasel of a man.

Now if he can just be thrown out prematurely, before his time, my dreams will come true.

Thank you for reading:smoke:

42. i'm with you on this one...
i seen this guy coming from over the horizon, it is a stain on our nation that so many dunder heads did & continue to support this g.w. bush...simply amazing, to see what lengths they or any of them will go rather than to admit that they damn well broke it & it's their fault.

powell warned him flat out, "you brake it you own it", but not this guy = him daddy told him him don't do him no wrong; it is a bush family character flaw of the 1st order

60. The march in that direction has begun!
I honestly don't see how he can possibly avoid it. This time it's OVER for the Chimp and the GOP! In 2006 we'll replace the party of 'Liars and Thieves' with patriots.

72. Man, can I ever relate! For the past five years I've felt
like a frickin' HOSTAGE. It's been an utter nightmare.

And doesn't he remind you of a spoiled little brat who's talking tough to the bathroom mirror after sneaking into his daddy's closet and snatching one of his suits to strut around in? Dear God, what a disgrace.

Visualize IMPEACHMENT... CONVICTION... AND REMOVAL FROM OFFICE... followed by a nice selection of trials for, oh, say, maybe, treason here, and war crimes in The Hague?

VISUALIZE...

77. Dream or Nightmare???
I see so many calls for impeachment, but no one is mentioning the fact that we will be stuck with DICK Cheney for the next 3 years.

* has lost whatever political clout he may have had. We can fend off most of his idiotic agenda, especially if we can take the majority back in at least one of the houses in 06.

I hate the smirking chimp as much as everyone else here, but I hate cheney just as much, if not more.

83. If Bush goes so does Cheney
If there is an investigation Cheney will definitely be involved. I suspect Cheney will resign claiming health reasons and his resignation may satisfy them enough they won't pursue it further.

76. DSMs is still not enpugh to force the House to start..
Impeachment of Bush/Cheney. What is required is conclusive proof of lying to the Congress. I believe that the proof exists within the CIA. I am holding onto hope that it will be leaked soon.

52. I'm anxious to see how our our July 4th. float will be accepted...
My dem group has a float in the parade every year. Last year it was election themed and we got about the same number of Kerry cheers as boos from the bushies. Mostly the crowd seemed a bit bored either way, more interested in the candy we were throwing. This year our theme is "Don't Pirate Away Our Social Security" and we will dress like pirates and have appropriate signs. I'm eager to see what the crowd response will be. I'll be able to judge if the tide is turning in our little community.

53. Think of it this way
Imagine how poor his approval ratings would be if this country had a real press corps that did some investigative journalism rather than the piss poor "stenography" we've been privileged to hear for the last 4.5 years. . . As a matter of fact, it wouldn't even take investigative journalism, any moron can see what a fucking idiot he is without making any effort whatsoever.
