Chinese president visits Russia for talks on strategic partnership
MOSCOW (AP) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao visited Russia on Thursday and is expected to bolster ties with Beijing's former rival in hopes of quadrupling their trade turnover to up to $80 billion a year by 2010.
...
Hu's trip reflects the strategic importance Beijing places on ties with its giant neighbor. He said his talks with President Vladimir Putin would likely "push our relations of strategic partnership forward,'' according to an interview carried by the ITAR-Tass news agency.

Hu and Putin were to sign a declaration reaffirming their nations' call for respecting international law and establishing a stronger U.N. role internationally, a Kremlin official said on condition of anonymity.

After decades of rivalry, Moscow and Beijing have developed what they call a strategic partnership since the 1991 Soviet collapse. They have pledged their adherence to a "multipolar world,'' a term referring to their opposition to the perceived domination of the United States in global affairs.

The two leaders were also expected to speak out against attempts to monopolize decision-making in international affairs and "impose models of social development from outside,'' the Kremlin official said Thursday.

1. Great. Just what we have been afraid of since WWII.
The chickenhawks will have a great time beating the drums over this one.
The largest powers in the east, two formerly communist allies that have much more in common with eachother than they do with the west.

I can easily see Russia and China in a much more strategic position to put pressure on the middle east than the US if for no other reason than geographic proximity.

The Bush admin has systematically alienated and distanced itself from China, not to mention the rest of the world. This underscores the complete and total failure of the Bush administration foreign policy.

The big goofy US is sitting on the playground and no one else will play with them.

2. Way to go, dick-weeds
"after decades of rivalry," it took the incompetence and arrogance of U.S.'s embarrassing shrubco to push these two countries into an unprecedented partnership. This is just great, wonderful job on national security, asshats.

8. Europe without the UK, though
If you look at the battle lines forming, it is the US, UK and Israel versus the rest of the world, a scenario for which the fundies have been salivating ever since the Scofield Reference Bible was published nearly 100 years ago.

16. yes BRIC + Euro + Muslim Street + Latin Amer...
and the funny thing is is Japan can be a lynchpin to end all this madness. if only they got involved and said, "Stop being foolish America, no more dollar for you..." and rip the $700 bil investment rug from underneath our feet all this can end.

if france, germany, et al want to put bush's nuts in a vice all they have to do is support japan in moving diplo ties from usa to them and BRIC.

whatever. things aren't looking good for poor ol' usa. now some dumbasses will see the power of diplomacy and friends. a military can't do it all, and is always useless against an insurgency (unless biowarfare genocide is involved, a la native americans).

21. Umm
Much more complicated. The new CEE-members have strong historical antipathy towards Russia.

Most importantly EU is going Global Corporate Fascism bigway, just infinitely more smart than idjat nazianalists of US admin, and socialist internationalism and anti-capitalist networking (aka Global opinion) is the only real counterbalance inside and outside OECD fascism.

AGITPROP! Agitate and spread (truthfull) propaganda!!! On the net, on the streets!!!

14. This is another major accomplishment
1) Uniting almost the entire world, in various military and economic constellations, against us.

2) Turning the Almighty Greenback into toilet paper.

3) Making our military weaker by outsourcing and miring us in a quagmire.

This man's a saint, a genus! I guess if the press had reported his resume back in 1999, none of this would surprise anyone.

CHINESE PRESIDENT TO TALK ENERGY

By Greg Walters
Staff Writer

Chinese President Hu Jintao was set to arrive in Moscow to meet President Vladimir Putin on Thursday as part of a global mission to secure energy supplies for his country's booming economy.

Trade will lead the agenda of Hu's four-day visit to Russia, with oil and electricity as top priorities.

Bilateral trade topped $21 billion last year, with Russian government officials predicting it could triple by 2010.

Even though the two countries have put aside Cold War-era disagreements in favor of commerce, the two giant neighbors still eye each other warily.

"The whole world is afraid of China's economic growth, including us," said Boris Titov, head of the Russian-Chinese Business Council. "But they're afraid of us, too. They need our oil."

Hu arrives in Moscow on his third visit to Russia at a time when Chinese foreign policy is increasingly focused on fueling its booming economy with reliable oil supplies.

Last week, China took the United States by surprise when state-owned oil company CNOOC made a $18.5 billion bid for U.S. oil major Unocal.

He may have to fall back on the Caspian fields, fizzle or no fizzle, or invade Venezuela or Canada.
