Va. Governor Injured in Tumble off Bicycle
Va. Governor Injured in Tumble off Bicycle

By Chris L. Jenkins
Washington Post Staff Writer

RICHMOND, June 27 -- Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner was injured today when he fell off a bicycle during a biking tour in Lexington, Va.

Warner, 50, broke two bones in his right hand, said Kevin Hall, Warner's press secretary. He spent two hours at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington where he was also treated of several other minor injuries, including scrapes. Hall said Warner was wearing a helmet, and he did not hit his head.

Hall added that Warner remained conscious during the entire episode, including the ride to the hospital. By mid-afternoon, Warner was on his way back to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond to see a specialist about the broken bones in his hand.

Warner was participating in the 18th Annual Bike Virginia Valley Byways Tour in Rockbridge County in the Shenandoah Valley, along with more than 2,000 other cyclists, according to a press release sent out by Warner's office last week.

Speculation Grows On Presidential Bid For Warner in 2008

By Michael D. Shear
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, November 14, 2004; Page C01

Web surfers at a site called the Democratic Underground think Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner should be their party's next presidential candidate. So does a guy named Steve, who has started a "Warner in 2008" Internet journal. And among political pundits and the soul-searching leadership of the Democratic Party, Warner's name keeps popping up.

7. I think Clinton broke a leg one time
skiing or something. What is it with politicians? They all think they're atheletic, but they aren't.

8. Some actually are athletic
Because some voters, for reasons beyond me, consider it a plus that a candidate be athletic, they all want to appear athletic. Maybe that it sends a signal that they are healthy.

Although Kerry was far far more athletic than Bush, playing 4 sports in college and still participating in long bike races (Boston to Cape Cod) versus being a cheerleader and repeatedly falling on his face from his bike (?!), I doubt it changed even one vote.

18. Kerry may be more athletic, but remember...
Bush is excellent at clearing brush. Everybody's gotta have a hobby, right?

Oh, and Bush was a cheerleader, too.

heh, heh, heh, heh....

21. Huh? Even athletes break their bones.
I was an NCAA volleyball player and broke my thumb playing a stupid game of backyard volleyball at a fraternity party. (No, I wasn't drunk -- mildly hungover maybe.) Of course, this was in Lexington too. Maybe it's something about Virginia. ;)

9. Uh-oh. Remember what George Wallace used to say about
"pointy-headed liberals" and their bicycles?

From http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04160/328403.stm :

"Life Support: How bicycles rolled into the political spotlight

Tuesday, June 08, 2004

By Dale McFeatters Stacy Innerst, Post-Gazette

After a long absence, the bicycle has pedaled its way back into American politics. Perhaps the zenith of the bike was in the late '60s when two Southern politicians, at various times candidates for president, seized on it as metaphor. Alabama Gov. George Wallace used to rant about "pointy-headed liberals in Washington who couldn't park a bicycle straight." It made no sense but his followers seemed to enjoy it.

To the delight of both news photographers and himself, Lester Maddox used to ride his bicycle backwards around the parking lot of his Atlanta fried-chicken stand. He never became president but did become governor of Georgia.

A few weeks ago, President Bush fell off his mountain bike at his Texas ranch, bringing the two-wheeler back from political obscurity...."

10. Politicians and bikes don't mix well
They are too busy looking for camera angles and who is around they may have to slow down and greet with more than a wave.

Everyone thinks riding a bike is easy. It is, unless under the influence of politics.

19. I've spent several hours in the ER at Stonewall Jackson Hospital...
when I broke my thumb playing volleyball at a fraternity party. I bet he got better service than I did.

Well if you're going to go on a bike tour in Virgina, Lexington is a beautiful place to do it. I'm not sure I'd recommend falling though.
