Bird flu 'as grave a threat as terrorism'
Bird flu 'as grave a threat as terrorism'
26 June 2005

Bird flu is now as much of a danger to Britain as terrorism, ministers have been told by the Government's official emergency body.

Top officials from the Civil Contingency Secretariat (CCS), part of the Cabinet Office, told a cabinet subcommittee last week that a flu pandemic - which it believes could kill 700,000 Britons - is now one of the most serious threats facing the country.

Plans are being made to close schools and cancel sporting fixtures in an attempt to limit the spread of the virus, and official advice on how to try to avoid being infected will be ready for publication this summer.

1. If it's so deadly then why hasn't millions died in Asia already?
More Bushshit.

Yeah, yeah, it's as deadly as swine flu.

Remember that?

11. What does being flippant have to do with this?
Will being flippant make the "pandemic" that may or may not arrive some year any more or less deadlier? Is it going to put the bad mojo on us? Will not being flippant save lives in some way? You act like if we don't have a "pandemic" soon you will be very disappointed or something. I say if the poster wants to be flippant about "pandemics" that we don't have or asteroids that haven't his us he ain't hurting nothing. Give it a break.

4. In 4 years
54 people have died...all in Asia.

This is not an epidemic.

More spreading of fear and panic.

microbiologists (since 9/11) may have had something to do with the ('expected') bird flu pandemic...

8. So many of those dead microbiologists were young (25-45),
so many died under unusual circumstances.
Pretty hard to just shrug off.

7. The vaccine will be made in the UK....
...and we in the US will wonder why the hell Merck isn't making it in several location on THIS continent.

I'm still sore that I was not able to get a flu shot for my 91 y.o. MIL last fall -- or for myself, for that matter.

Yeah, all the public health folks (except Bush appointees, of course) seem to pretty much agree that a global pandemic is on its way, something on the scale of the one in 1920 (or was it 1918?) that killed something like 20 million people. They can see it coming, but the flu virus mutates so rapidly that they really can't stock up more than a season ahead, and a lot of what they do is guesswork.

12. SARS was going to
kill us all, remember?

And a whole bunch of other things we prepared and stocked up for if we could.

West Nile virus, Ebola, Anthrax...

Never happened. This won't either.

But they pull this 'pandemic panic' about twice a year now.

It's getting old

10. Looks like the deaths of the forty-plus dead microbiologists (since 9/11)
Looks like the deaths of the forty-plus microbiologists (since 9/11) are about to pay off big-time for the Bush junta: the quarantines and the tag-along full-blown police state, all managed by Vice President Bill Frist. Bush's approval rating for the Iraq war just hit 28% in California... even Rove and Diebold can't pull this one out of the sewer.

When the ('expected') avian flu pandemic hits, do you think we will all be sitting around, discussing the Downing Street Memo? Bush now needs his bioterror chickens to come home to roost.

Remember, you read it here first. --Lori Price
